Fight Fear of Registry Regret with these Baby Essentials

Before I was pregnant, I would drive by Babies R Us and stare longingly into the windows dreaming of the day that it would be my turn to create the perfect baby registry to welcome our new bundle of joy. When that day finally came, I grabbed the scanner and was ready to start selecting items I knew were absolutely essential to my parenting success. You know, just the bare necessities, like adorable pink headbands and paisley patterned pacifiers, of course.

Just a few days after baby was born, I began to realize that I was grossly unprepared.  I needed a breast pump, diaper rash cream, milk storage bottles and DIAPERS!  All of the unglamorous items were mysteriously missing from my beautifully decorated nursery. According to a survey conducted by Pampers, I was not alone. In fact, over half of Moms have regrets about their baby registry and 90% of Moms wish they included more diapers on the list.

Pampers also found that 56% of Moms felt that the baby registry experience was more overwhelming than they expected, and I could not agree more. Due to my own experience, I wanted to help out a first time expecting Mom as she begins thinking about her registry to offer advice and a special surprise gift! Going for the Gold with #PampersDreams

My family is so excited to watch the Olympic Games in Rio in just a few short weeks!  I often wonder how the moms of the Olympic Athletes must feel watching their children compete. Is it a feeling of pride? Accomplishment? Disbelief? My husband and I often talk about what our kids will be when they grow up, and I wonder if the Olympians’ mothers knew that one day, their children would be going for the gold?
One Olympian we will be watching is new mom and Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer, competing in her first Olympic Games since giving birth to her son, Arlen, last March. Dana wanted Arlen to grow up recognizing the importance of hard work and be able to set goals and big dreams for himself at a young age, so she committed herself to swimming again after his birth. Dana recognizes that kids who see their parents work hard to achieve goals will likely have passion to achieve their own goals.

My own two children have big dreams for themselves as well, and we often talk about what’s going to be necessary to make them happen. Our son talks about being an engineer, and knows that careful attention to his studies will facilitate that. Our daughter had us laughing one day when she informed us she wanted to be a teacher because she liked telling everyone what to do. As a teacher myself,  I assured her there was much more to teaching than being bossy, but she’s already changed her mind and talks about being a veterinarian.  No matter what route they take, I know one thing is certain.  The road to success certainly starts at home.
In fact, love and encouragement from her family are what reignited Dana’s drive to swim again. Her goal of winning gold at this year’s Olympic Games is not just hers alone. Her Olympic experience will be one she shares with her family.

Honoring New Moms with Pampers #ThanksBaby

This Mother’s Day, I took a moment to reflect on how my life has changed since becoming a Mom. Eleven years ago, when Lily was placed in my arms, my journey of Motherhood began. I remember being scared as I had no experience with babies (I didn’t even babysit as a teenager). But when Lily was born, I was born. My new role as a Mom was realized and it was time to step up.

As a Mom, I knew that I would have to teach my daughter many things. But to be honest, I think she has taught me even more. Self confidence, compromise, generosity, sacrifice, and most definitely patience and just a few things that I need to thank Lily for. She made me whole.

This Mother’s Day, Pampers gave me the opportunity to honor new Moms as they began their own journeys into Motherhood.  Using a Pampers grant and partnering with Renee from What Mommies Need, we surprised many New Orleans Moms! For starters, I surprised one local Mom who delivered her daughter just 48 hours before Mother’s Day and brought her new bundle of joy home on that special day with a stroller, Pampers wipes, Dreft products, and of course, lots of Pampers diapers.

We also wanted to surprise Moms who delivered ON Mother’s Day with a special gift. We loaded a wallet with gift cards to make Mom’s life a little easier upon returning home with her new baby. We stocked Mom with gift cards to Starbucks, Zoe’s Kitchen, Ulta, Cane’s and Babies R Us and tied the wallet to a package of Pampers diapers and wipes to give baby the best possible start.  We delivered six of these packages to a local hospital and the nurses distributed them to the first six Moms who delivered on Mother’s Day.

Pampers Swaddlers Thank You Nurses

You’ve cared for your growing baby for around 40 weeks trying to enjoy the journey while worrying about every movement, heartbeat and ultrasound. But the excitement of seeing your baby’s face, holding baby’s hand, and kissing baby’s forehead all for the first time is almost overwhelming. Heading to the hospital to have my first baby, my excitement remained but my fears quickly took over.

I don’t know how to care for a baby! How do I change a diaper? Will breastfeeding be successful? How do I give baby a bath? What if baby gets sick? What if I don’t have any motherly instincts?

Fortunately, from the moment I arrived at the hospital, I was greeted with a team of nurses that could not have been more amazing. From getting me through a NINETEEN hour labor to teaching me to breastfeed my newborn, I learned so much in my first few hours of Motherhood from the nurses assigned to me.

Soon after birth, my daughter unfortunately had to be taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As a new Mom, I was a mess but the nurses who tended to my daughter made sure I was informed of any and all changes, answered a multitude of questions and transported me from my recovery room to the NICU anytime I asked. And they did it all with love, compassion and a smile.

I cannot thank those nurses enough for everything they did to make Lily’s first few days on Earth beautiful and my days as a Mom more than special. Visit the Pampers Cruisers #SagToSwag Tour!

Making the World #BetterforBaby with Drew’s Tunes and Pampers

Like any Mom, there is nothing I would not do for my babies. By just watching the evening news, it is clear that today’s World is far from perfect but it is encouraging that despite the grim stories, there are even more good people in this World who will are willing to make it better.

I learned about two of these special people from a friend and was immediately moved by the story of Drew’s Tunes.  Georgia and Devron Boswell welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby boy in November of 2012. With smitten parents, Drew flourished and grew into a loving, happy, sweet toddler.

“Drew’s passion for music grew and he was constantly “playing” an array of instruments including kazoos, bongos and his favorite little red piano.”

Unfortunately, Drew passed away unexpectedly in his sleep in March of 2014 at just 15 months of age. With no cause of death, Georgia and Devron learned about the Sudden Unexplained Death in Children (SUDC) Program and joined a community of 600 affected families. This program not only is pioneering clinical research but is a centralized resource for information, support and advocacy. But for Georgia and Devron, this was not enough. They needed to do more to honor their son’s legacy and they wanted to do it through music. Drew’s Tunes was born.

“Drew’s Tunes has made it our mission to honor the blessing we had in our lives for 15 blissful months by striving to bring joyous smiles to other children.”

As early as Drew’s Memorial Service, Georgia and Devron requested that people make donations to a children’s arts program in the impoverished neighborhood of Tremé in New Orleans in lieu of flowers. In just a few weeks, these parents raised $10,000 and saved the summer camp from being cancelled due to local budget cuts. Drew was already making an impact.

Georgia and Devron pressed on and hosted a Bowl-A-Thon just 5 months after Drew’s passing and raised $41,000! More than 200 instruments, $33,000 to summer camps and $12,500 to SUDC research have been donated in Drew’s name. Building on their success, Drew’s Tunes hosted their 2nd Annual Bowl-A-Thon in August of 2015.

As a member of the Pampers Baby Board, I am often given the opportunity to make a difference in our own communities with the support of the brand. Pampers recently released a new video celebrating the fact that there is nothing parents won’t do for their children and how each person can make this World #BetterforBaby. The members of the Pampers Baby Board were challenged to make the World better for baby in our own community and immediately I knew I needed to help Drew’s Tunes.

Teaming up with Renee from What Mommies Need (another local Baby Board blogger), we combined our grant money to make a big impact. Donating money as a sponsor of Drew’s Tunes Bowl-A-Thon 2015 was just the tip of the iceberg. Renee and I were also able to purchase $2,000 in musical instruments (bongos, drums, maracas, xylophones, kazoos and tambourines) which will be donated to New Orleans preschools and daycare centers and $2500 in technology that will help Drew’s Tunes make an even bigger impact for years to come. I am happy to report that Drew’s Tunes raised over $61,000 at this year’s Bowl-A-Thon!

Making the World #BetterforBaby with Pampers

At iRetreat in New Orleans, I had the chance to see the unveiling of the Pampers Better for Baby campaign. It is a program that recognizes how babies have the ability to bring out the best in all of us and that is why we should do our part to make life better for them.

Screen Shot 2015-07-05 at 9.23.11 PMAs part of the campaign, Pampers is unveiling a video that celebrates all the profound ways babies change the world around them for the better – and in turn asks families to pledge how they will make life #BetterForBaby. Disclaimer: grab a tissue, it’s a definite tear jerker.

In order to do their part to make the World better for baby, Pampers has supported the happy, healthy development of babies for the last 50 years. Pampers is committed to doing their small part through  commitments including:

  • protecting premature babies
  • helping families in need through product donations
  • preventing maternal and neonatal tetanus
  • reducing their environmental impact.

In fact, at the launch of this #BetterforBaby campaign, Pampers is making a significant donation to each of their charity partners (Graham’s Foundation, UNICEF and Feeding America).

The generous actions of this brand who really gets behind and supports the consumer really got me thinking. What was I going to pledge? How can I make life better for baby?  While I can’t do anything on such a large scale like Pampers does, I can do things in my own home. Babies may be little, but they have this extraordinary power to bring out the best in us and in turn, change the world for the better. So I pledged to do the following three things:

  1. Take care of my health because a healthy mom means a happier mom.
  2. To maximize my family time because I can’t get these moments back.
  3. To be a positive support for other moms and not contribute to mom shaming.

I really enjoyed the experience to reflect and determine what I could pledge to do my share. Share Your Special Firsts with Pampers

After trying for 6 months to become pregnant with our first child, I started to worry that something was wrong. Every negative pregnancy test made me yearn to be a Mother that much more. But finally in 2004, my husband and I were thrilled to announce we would soon become a family of three.

The first time I heard the heartbeat. The first ultrasound. The first flutters of baby kicks. The first contractions. All of these firsts were magical moments I will never forget.

And then she arrived.

The first smile. The first solid foods. The first laugh. The first time she walked.  All precious memories to me.

After my Maternity Leave was over and it was time to head back to work, my arms actually ached for my baby while I was away. And I am eternally grateful. For all the firsts and for all of the people who made those firsts even more memorable. Thank you.

Giving the Gift of Sleep to an Expecting Mom with Pampers

One of my favorite parts of being a member of the Pampers Baby Board is being able to complete fun “missions” in my hometown.  This month we were tasked with “Giving the Gift of Sleep” to a new or expecting Mom in our community in honor of the biggest innovation in Pampers’ more than 50 year history.

Pampers diapers are now three times drier than ordinary diapers featuring an absorb away liner to keep baby dry for up to 12 glorious hours.  The new diaper can result in the best possible experience for baby and a good night sleep for Mom and Dad.  Now, it was my turn to share my Mom experience with an expecting Mom and deliver “the gift of sleep.”

A good friend of mine is expecting her first baby in January!  The baby is much anticipated by family and friends so I thought I would share my tips and tricks by putting together a basket full of items guaranteed to hep the new parents get some rest.

After searching her baby registry, I decided on a few sleep specific items.  First, I purchased some lavender scented baby lotion to get baby relaxed and ready for bed.  Both of my babies slept best when swaddled, so a Swaddle Me blanket is essential for this basket along with a lovey for when baby gets older.  To help soothe a fussy baby, I included a white noise machine (my girls still go to bed with the same lullabyes I played when they were infants).  A video enabled baby monitor is such a great idea because when Mom knows her baby is safely sound asleep, it’s much easier to drift off herself. I also selected some crib sheets in brown and cream to match the nursery theme to make sure baby is warm and cozy.

Not to forget about the new parents, I added a gift card to a restaurant so they can enjoy a night out or pick up dinner to enjoy at home.  To make sure Mom is pampered and relaxed, I included a gift card to a local salon for some primping.  Last but certainly not least, I rounded out the gift basket with Pampers Swaddlers Size 1 and 2 along with some Pampers wipes.  With the new innovation, baby can stay dry all night and let Mom and Dad get some sleep, too!

This “Gift of Sleep” mission was so fun!  Thanks to Pampers for providing a gift card allowing me to surprise a friend and celebrate her new little miracle.

Superior Dryness Promotes Superior Sleep {Pampers Giveaway}

Even though my babies are no longer real “babies,” I remember all too well the sleepless nights followed by miserable days with a sleepy baby.  My oldest was never a fan of nighttime and loved to through midnight parties, my youngest slept like a brick.  She would sleep through the barking dog, the telephone ringing, the television and even a vacuum cleaner.  But, a wet diaper made for a cranky and very awake baby.  As a result, I would have done anything to keep her dry if it meant sleeping through the night and after Pampers interviewed nearly 9,000 Moms, I learned that I am not the only one wishing for a superior diaper.

Moms wished.  Pampers delivered.  In the biggest innovation in Pampers’ more than 50 year history, Pampers diapers are now three times drier than ordinary diapers, which result in the best possible experience for baby.  Even better, the popular Pampers Swaddlers now have additional comfort features and come through Size 5!

I absolutely loved the softness of the Swaddlers when my babies were little and would have loved to continue using them through Size 5.   Additional Swaddlers features include a wetness indicator to signal when baby needs to be changed (great for knowing when a sleeping baby needs to be changed) and an absorb away liner to keep baby dry for up to 12 glorious hours.  Superior dryness=superior sleep!
