Capturing Life with the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 {Giveaway}

This post is the opinion of the Experimental Mommy.  While a sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% mine.

This July marked five years since I started this blog.  FIVE YEARS.  That’s like a whole hand!  One thing that I have been trying to improve (among many) is my photography skills.  I want to be able to bring you eye catching images of the products I test and the recipes I make (or try to make).  Three years ago, I purchased the Canon Rebel T1i to take my budding skills to the next level.

It changed my life.

The quality of my pictures grew exponentially and so did the traffic to the blog.  I could not have been happier with my purchase!  Since then, my Canon and I have been inseparable but I will admit that sometimes it was a pain to carry or pack in my luggage to take on a press junket.  You can imagine my excitement when I saw a commercial advertising the new Canon Rebel SL1 which is the world’s smallest at lightest DSLR camera.

It needed to be mine.

As fate would have it, I was asked to review the object of my affection, the Canon Rebel SL1, right here on Experimental Mommy.  Even better?  I get to give one away…keep reading! Here’s some techy stuff about the camera:

The new EOS Rebel SL1 is small in size but enormous in performance. With a newly-designed Canon 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and speedy Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor, it delivers images of extraordinary quality – ideal for those stepping up from a smartphone or compact camera.  In addition to its Optical Viewfinder, the EOS Rebel SL1 has a bright, wide Touch Screen 3.0″ Clear View LCD monitor II, perfect for viewing a number of special scene modes and Creative Filters available in real-time display.

Last week, I took the camera on a family vacation to Honduras, Belize and Cozumel.  I knew there would be some amazing sights to see and I didn’t want to miss a thing.  The smaller size of the EOS Rebel SL1 made it much easier to slip in my purse or carry-on bag.

Even though the camera body is smaller, the quality of my images are excellent.  Take a look at a few images I captured during our trip below.  You can see that the colors and clarity are just lovely.

I love my Canon Rebel SL1 so much that I had to introduce it to my family.  However, that may have been a mistake as it was quite difficult to get it back on our day touring the Mayan Ruin, Altun Ha.

My experience with the Canon Rebel SL1 has been nothing but positive.  I am in love with it’s small size as it is so much easier to transport and even conceal in my purse.  Now, I am obsessed with buying a new lens!

Do you have upcoming life moments that you just need to capture?  Good news!  One Experimental Mommy winner will receive the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 (ARV $799.99)!  Enter below:

  1. With three young children, I have many moments throughout the day that need to be captured! I have a T2i, but is love to have something smaller for travel!

  2. I would capture all kinds of daily moments with my kids…. especially my kids with my mom, after losing my dad unexpectedly (he traveled for work a lot so it was sometimes hard to get pics of him with my kids) 22 months ago and having my mom diagnosed with cancer last month, I want to capture every moment. I’d also love to capture soccer games this fall.

  3. I’m an avid scrapbooker and I LOVE to take pictures! I love pictures in general! I love to look at old ones and imagine myself in those days, how my ancestors were back then, or a moment I may have forgotten only for a second until I see the sweet face of one of my babies. I take pictures so when my children are grown they too can relive those special moments!!!

  4. I would capture new family moments. We were married almost two years ago and don’t have a real camera. We only use our cellphones right now. I used to have an SLR a long time ago and loved it.

  47. I’d love to capture family parties, trips, and holidays; unexpected moments like when a family member gets good news or receives an award; and the everyday moments that make life special when we spend time together as a whole family!

  48. Everything. I had a nice camera but it had an unfortunate Diet Coke accident on a cruise ship. I have not been able to buy another so I have been using a pitiful camera I got my daughter to take on a field trip . I took pictures all the time and now I feel lost with out a good quality camera.

  49. We have a plan to have a road trip to west coast this fall, it’d be very nice if I won the camera and captured our road trip memories. Thank you for the chance.

  51. Bridgette,
I want to thank you again for the great read about your Cozumel trip. I think that cruise is the perfect fit for me and my boys. I left a comment on that page for you. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this website this morning. Can’t thank you enough.

  60. Taking my middle child to her birth country for a visit, for the first time since her birth six years ago. Would love to document her experience and adventures while there, so she has the memories preserved. 🙂 It’s a pretty big moment for her and I’d like to photograph it with something other than my iPhone hahaha! Thanks for the chance, my fingers and toes are crossed. 🙂

  61. I switched to digital photography shortly before my first son was born, and it has been a savings over buying film & developing. But thus far I’ve only been able to afford lower-end digital cameras. I’d love to be able to take higher quality photos like I did with my 35mm gear.

  62. I would capture the changes that my husband is doing around the house to make it more of our own. Before and after pics . We bought the house almost a yr ago and we are slowly changing it to our taste.

  68. As a young blogger traveling and seeing the world and starting my life in the “real world” over-seas in Spain, capturing all of the sights to share with my family, friends, and readers is SO incredibly important to me. I would love to own this camera to make capturing amazing images even more accessible!

  69. Yes, I’m not a mom but I do take care of my younger brothers and little sister. With this camera, I would take snapshots of how my young siblings turn into teens and eventually, responsible adults. I’d love to capture each moment, may it be their ups or downs, their triumphs and challenges, and the result of years of hard work and persistence to learn more about life. This upcoming summer, I would love this camera to witness another triumph of my sweet little sister, and that’s no other than her Primary school graduation.

From memorable vacation moments to family get togethers, quality photos have always been important to me. Sure you can use your smart phone (you’d be surprised how many perplexed looks I get when I take out my point and shoot camera for a photo) but nothing beats an actual camera with lenses and zoom for crystal clear frame worthy photos!

  87. Our vacations and family gatherings. I also like to take pictures from the back of my husbands motorcycle while we ride with friends to different places.

  88. I have been itching to pull the trigger on a DSLR myself. I have been relying on professional photograph for my site but I think it’s time to take it on myself. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
