Verizon Palm Pre Plus: Wrapping it Up!

For the past 4 weeks, I have had the opportunity to thoroughly test the new Verizon Palm Pre Plus smartphone.  I have shared with you the results of my little “experiments” and thought it would be beneficial to sum it all up in one place.  Check out the posts below to see my “lab reports” on my experiences:

There were several things I loved about the Palm Pre Plus including the touch screen and it’s internet surfing capabilities. However, I was less than thrilled with it’s battery life and texting accuracy.  I feel that this phone would be great for someone who is Internet heavy (needs to surf the Net, use Twitter or other social media devices, but not as great for someone who is email intensive.  I found it more difficult to quickly reply to email and often mistyped with this keyboard.  My overall grade for the Verizon Palm Pre for my specific needs:  B-

Verizon Palm Pre: Afterall, it IS a phone!

I hope you have been enjoying my recent posts describing my experiments with the new Verizon Palm Pre Plus!  I have really discovered some great features that have made life as a busy Mom a little more organized and a little less stressful.  But let’s face it, you need a phone.  Sure, the gadgets are nice, but what about when you need to make an emergency call or just chat with an old friend?

The Palm Pre Plus is actually quite user friendly when it comes to making a phone call.  Simply click on the green phone icon and the numbers appear on your screen ready for you to dial.  Your addresses can also be accessed with one simple touch and using your touchscreen gestures, it’s easy to navigate to find the number you need.  And for your convenience (and because my memory is not what it used to be), it is possible to make a call directly from the address book.

There has been lots of controversy about talking on a cell phone while driving.  In fact, many states now prohibit it and require a hands-free device to be worn while operating your vehicle.  You will be happy to know that the Palm Pre is Bluetooth ready and very easy to setup.  I also love the speakerphone option which makes phone calls between my kids and their relatives lots of fun.

touchstoneVerizon’s website claims that the phone will get 330 minutes of talk time, but I think this must mean if you don’t use any other features.  I found that my battery ran down quickly and required a middle of the day charge session which wasn’t always convenient.  That being said, the Palm Pre does have a really neat Touchstone Standalone Charger available for purchase as an accessory ($50, but also requires a $20 phone cover).   To charge your phone, all you have to do it place your Palm Pre on the touchstone and it charges wirelessly!  So charge it up and feel free to gab away!

With this review series winding down, my last post will be a summary of my thoughts and links to more Mommy reviews!  Don’t miss it!

Verizon Palm Pre Plus: My Top Apps

This month, I have been letting you in on my journey to discover the new Verizon Palm Pre.  Is this phone really the  best thing for a busy Mom on the go?  In post number 6, I wanted to share with you my favorite Palm Pre Applications.

One great thing about the Palm Pre is that you can truely make it your own.  With so many applications (apps) to choose from, you can make your phone work for YOU!  Being a mom of two with a full time job, there are several apps that I found after looking through Palm’s App catalog that would definitely make my job easier.

1.  Poster:Write and edit posts for your WordPress blog on your phone. You can also upload photos, add links, and edit tags and categories. Save them on the phone and post when you’re done.”  Being able to write posts or jot down ideas on the go is worth it’s weight in gold.  I have limited time to update my blog and this app would definitely help me make the most of it!

IMG_07842.  Twee:Enjoy Twitter on your phone without sacrificing any features. Twee gives you notifications, updates your location, and finds tweets of people nearby. Track trends, see URLs, and share photos.”  Running a successful blog requires that you stay connected with social media and keep your readers updated on the happenings on your site.  Twee would make connecting with readers via Twitter so much easier while on the go.  I don’t have to miss a thing!

IMG_07863.  Grocery List:  “Create a list of items to purchase and check them off as you pick up what you need. The app keeps a history of items you’ve added so you don’t have to enter them every time you need them.” How many times have you been out and reminded yourself that you need more milk from the store?  Now, simply jot it down in Grocery List and make sure you never forget another essential ingredient again!  Pull up your list while shopping and check them off after they hit the basket.  Genius!

Take a look at the App catalog and see how you can make the Palm Pre work for your lifestyle.  Between news and weather, games, and financial apps, there is sure to be something for everyone!

Verizon Palm Pre Plus: Field Trip!

verizonsmallIt’s no secret that I am directionally challenged.  I have lived in New Orleans my entire life and I still get lost (in my defense the streets here have no rhyme or reason).  Unfortunately, my car is not equipped with a GPS unit, but I know it would be wonderful to have one in this City.  Much to my surprise, I learned that my new Verizon Palm Pre Plus can perform the function of a GPS unit!  Now I can have a GPS on me at all times, even when walking around the French Quarter!

After opening the launcher, simply click on the shortcut to Google Maps which will automatically use GPS to pinpoint exactly where you are located.  I have tried this at various points in the City and it is never more than two block off target.

From your starting point you can do several things:

1.  Map directions to your destination.  With the touch screen it is very easy to navigate around the map as well as zoom in for more detailed street names.

2.  Check on traffic.  Oh yes, this feature will tell you which areas on your route have traffic delays (marked in yellow) or are gridlocked (marked in red).  I used this feature this morning and it was pretty accurate on my morning commute to work.

3.  Find restaurants, shopping and gas.  The map not only contains street names, but locations of restaurants, malls and gas stations.  This would be very helpful while on vacation!

4.  Look at the satellite view.  Switching to satellite lets you see the street as it appears in reality.  While the image is several years old (I can tell because in satellite view my neighboorhood is full of FEMA trailers after Katrina which have since been removed), it still allows you to see what the area looks like.

5.  Get Public Transit and Walking Directions from your location.  This is very helpful as we have several methods of public transit here in New Orleans.

I doing some research on the Palm Pre, I have been hearing that people are looking forward to the addition of Google Latitude which will allow you to search for your friends!  This feature is not available at this time but sounds pretty neat!

I find that heavy Internet usage tends to drain the battery fairly quickly, but the GPS feature is wonderful and a definite plus to the Verizon Palm Pre!  It has been useful in my own hometown, so I can only imagine how we will rely on the GPS feature when we are out of town in an unfamiliar City!

Bon Voyage!

Staying connected with Verizon Palm Pre Plus!

As a Mom Blogger, social networking has become a way of life.  It is important to the success of my blog to keep one eye on the happenings in the blogosphere and the other on the newest products and stories my readers depend on.  While the calendar feature of the Verizon Palm Pre Plus helps me stay organized while on the go, it is absolutely essential for me to stay connected!

The customer service representative at Verizon helped me set up my two email accounts on the Palm Pre Plus and I was ready to go in no time.  I am able to read and respond to review requests, advertising inquires and personal emails in a timely fashion which ensures that I won’t miss an excellent opportunity.  One of the features I missed about my Blackberry Curve was that it had a blinking indicator to alert me when a new email arrived.  However, during a recent software update, my Palm Pre Plus now blinks as well!  I also love how easy it is to delete unwanted emails from my smartphone…it only takes a simple swipe of my finger and it’s gone.  The slide out full keyboard is convenient, but I am having a hard time getting used to it.  I tend to type double letters and misspell more with this phone than any other in the past.

Web pages look like web pages!

Web pages look like web pages!

Surfing the Internet with the Verizon Palm Pre Plus is a dream!  The HTML Web Browser allows to to see web pages as they actually appear on the Internet.  I absolutely love this feature.  My old phone only allowed me to see web pages in text form, so interacting on Twitter and Facebook were next to impossible.  The intuitive Palm WebOS allows you to keep multiple apps open at once making quickly promoting a new review or giveaway very easy and convenient.  Sending out a tweet, switching to Facebook and heading back to Twitter is completely seamless (you can even answer a phone call without disturbing your Internet session).

When a new text message or email arrives, a little notification summary shows up at the bottom of my screen.  I love getting this little “sneak peek” so I can decide if the message is urgent or able to be answered at a later time just by glancing at the screen.

If you use your phone for heavy Internet surfing, the Verizon Palm Pre Plus is a great phone for you!

Meeting the Verizon Palm Pre Plus (Part 1)

When I was in college, my Mom and Dad bought me what I now affectionately call “The Bag-o-Phone.”  This thing was enormous, plugged into my car and was to be used ONLY in case of emergencies.  It was a few years later that I actually bought a cell phone that didn’t have to be plugged in!  Man, what a long way technology has come!

Sometime last year, I decided to take another leap and join the trend of receiving emails on my phone and being able to surf the Net on the go.  I currently own a Verizon Blackberry Curve which, I will admit, is addictive.  However, after seeing my friends easily surf the Web with their touch phones, I started to wonder if that type of phone would better suit my lifestyle.  Reluctant to take the leap and abandon my Blackberry, I resisted….until now!

verizonbuttonI was lucky enough to be chosen as a Verizon Palm Pre Plus Mommy Blogger and have been given the opportunity to test out the touch phone and put it through the paces of a working Mom on the go!  Through March 31st, I will but the Verizon Palm Pre Plus through the obstacle course that is my life and report to you the results in a series of eight posts.

A few days ago, I purchased the phone with gift cards sent to me by Verizon.  The employees at Verizon were helpful in giving me a basic tutorial on the phone as well as setting up my email accounts and importing my contacts.  In just under 30 minutes, I was set loose with my new toy.

It’s all about first impressions, isn’t it?  When I got home, I sat down with both the Verizon Palm Pre Plus and my old Blackberry and made a few comparisons:

palmpreI like the look of the Palm Pre Plus.  It has a very modern, sleek and compact design.  The dimensions are smaller than the Blackberry but has a larger display screen making web pages easier to navigate.  I find that the graphics and crispness of the images are also better on the Palm.  The weight feels nearly the same, or at least I cannot tell much of a difference.  However, I am finding it a bit harder to type on the keyboard of the Palm Pre Plus, but it may just be a learning curve.

I’m going to take a few more days to learn the workings of the Palm and all of the “gestures” necessary to navigate through it’s features.  Stay tuned for my next post!
