National Geographic Kids “Weird but True”: Review and Giveaway

hypothesis The National Geographic Kids “Weird But True: 300 Outrageous Facts” will be a fun book to read to my inquisitive 5 year old daughter while being educational, too!

materials

One National Geographic “Weird But True” book, my 5 year old daughter, and storytime. About National Geographic:

weirdWeird But True is based on the hugely popular magazine page of quirky, fun facts that many readers of National Geographic Kids magazine turn to first. Why? Well did you know that… Peanut butter can be converted into a diamond? The world’s oldest pet goldfish lived to be 43 years old? The world’s longest soap bubble was as long as four school buses? On Neptune, the wind blows up to 1,243 miles an hour? An elephant’s tooth can weigh as much as a bowling ball?

All of the facts in this handy book will amaze friends and family: Animals Superpowers…Chills and Thrills…Eat or Be Eaten…Mini and Mega…Wild and Crazy, and much, much more. Adjacent pages for such facts present a one-paragraph explanation of how that fact is possible or why it is so.  Wacky facts, fascinating information, and lively art combine in this easy-to-browse, casual reference book that is sure to give young readers hours of fun. ~Amazon.com

Did you know that New York drifts further from London by an inch every year?  Or that if you run in the rain, you will get about 50% wetter than if you just stood still?  These are only some of the really neat things I learned from reading this book with Lily.  I will admit that I was just as captivated as she and couldn’t wait to turn the page to see what was next.  As you would expect, National Geographic Kids does a great job on photography and layout of this book, but they also did a wonderful job creating a book that appeals to both kids AND adults!

“Weird but True” is a fast read even though it spans nearly 200 pages because you are just captivated by the information!  I mean, who doesn’t want to know that, “Ladybugs squirt smelly liquid from their knees when then get scared?

hypothesis

I am always game for any book that makes my child excited about reading!  Last year, I purchased a National Geographic Kids magazine subscription for Lily and she just dives in when a new one arrives in the mail.  So, I knew anything put out by this company would be first rate, and I was right.  Both Lily and I enjoyed the “Weird but True” book and we both highly recommend this read!

Would your child love to learn 300 Outrageous Facts? National Geographic Kids has generously offered one lucky Not-So-Blog reader a “Weird but True” book of their own!

National Geographic Kids 2010 Almanac: Review and Giveaway

hypothesis The National Geographic Kids 2010 Almanac will be a book to introduce to Lily during our bedtime reading rituals while teaching her in a fun and exciting way!

materials

One National Geographic Kids 2010 Almanac, my almost 5 year old daughter, and storytime.  About National Geographic:

nationalgeographic

Dare to explore—from modern day adventures to close calls and narrow escapes. In this book, amazing animals take readers into the wild and into the water. Reading has always been a very important part of Lily’s bedtime routine since she was as young as 6 months old.  I actually think I enjoy it is as much as she does!  Snuggling up with her and reading a new story each night, and watching as she soaks up the will be something I miss as she gets older!

Photobucket

We are always on the lookout for new stories and books to read, and as Lily gets older, her taste in books is maturing.  So, I knew she would love the National Geographic Kids 2010 Almanac.  This hardcover book includes over 300 pages and 500 incredible photos which teach subject areas such as science, geography and history.

My husband is a history teacher, so he loves reading to her the sections on government, Presidents and First Ladies!  So far, Lily’s favorite is the story about Barack Obama’s two daughters.  Pretty soon, we will dive into the Science section!  The stories are written on her level and include many gorgeous photos which keep her attention and spark her quest for knowledge.

hypothesis

Lily loves picking out a short story to read with her Daddy before bedtime.  The National Geographic Kids 2010 Almanac is very well put together, speaks to children, and is absolutely beautiful.  This book would make a great keepsake for your child, or a welcome addition to any elementary school classroom.  The book (and other great National Geographic Kids Magazines) can be purchased directly for $19.95.

Would your child love an almanac of their very own?  National Geographic has generously offered one luck Not-So-Blog reader a Kids 2010 Almanac!

Subway: Giveaway!

When I was a kid, m0st of our family vacations went as follows:  wake up, drive a million hours to a destination, eat whatever food was close to the Interstate (even if it meant eating at the same chain restaurant for every meal), eat junk food in the car, arrive at hotel, swim until we burned off all the sugar we ate that day, go to sleep……repeat.

Face it, while vacations are incredibly fun, they are usually jam packed with unhealthy foods.  Very few people actually count calories while on vacation, and convenience becomes priority.

Fortunately, Subway offers a healthy and delicious option while on the road.  You can easily find a Subway near you by either your nose (just follow the smell of the freshly baked bread) or by using the restaurant locator on their website (this is probably more reliable!).

While your are enjoying your meal at Subway, why not have your child enter the “Taste for Adventure” contest!  Beginning July 1, kids (age 6-14) can share, in 100 words or less, their most exciting journey (past, present or even a future dream adventure) for a chance to win an unforgettable Alaskan Family Adventure! Simply enter at www.Subwaykids.com, or in-store.

GIVEAWAY

Do you want to “eat fresh” while on vacation?  Subway has generously offered one lucky Not-So-Blog reader a Subway Car Kit!   The kits will include: an insulated lunch tote for healthy snacks, a $10 SUBWAY gift card, car games, etc. (approximate value = $35-40) similar to the below picture (colors or games may vary).

Sun Chips Giveaway: Green Effect Contest

Time for a little bragging! Recently, I joined Weight Watchers Online and I have been trying REALLY hard to lose some weight. Guess what? I am down 6 pounds!!! Considering I only have 12 to lose, I am half-way there! Whoo hoo!

I have been diligently following the Points system at Weight Watchers, but one of my weaknesses is potato chips. As I was contemplating which sandwich to purchase at Subway, I was introduced to Sun Chips.  These chips are 30% less fat than the regular potato chip, 18 grams of whole grain per serving and they are tasty, too!
