SanDisk Sansa Fuze MP3 Player: Review

It’s amazing how music can change your mood.  When I am feeling on edge or anxious, I love to pop in my iPod and put on some tunes to take my mind off of the issue.  The portable device stays in my purse and allows me to escape anytime, anyplace.  Unfortunately, these devices can be pretty expensive causing us to choose only one for our family.  However, thanks to Mom Central, I was recently introduced to the SanDisk Sansa Fuze MP3 Player.  About the product:

SanDisk Sansa Fuze MP3 PlayerThe Sansa® Fuze™+ MP3 player gives you more player for less money. From its sleek and thin styling to its invisible touch control, the Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player delivers a great user experience and lets you do more than just play music files. Add a blank microSD™ card to expand your own music library or an optional slotRadio™ card for an instant library of songs – even listen to FM radio with the ability to record stations or record your voice with the built-in mic. Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player is the newest in a long line of award-winning players from the inventor of flash memory cards.

I was sent the Sansa Fuze 4GB in Black, but they come in an array of colors including red, purple, blue, white and black and up to 16GB of storage. Starting at only $79.99, this MP3 player is more than affordable!

One huge difference between the Sansa Fuze and other MP3 players is the fact that it is also a recordable FM radio.  Being able to switch from my playlist to local radio shows is invaluable.  While the 4GB Fuze can hold up to 1,000 songs (downloading from your computer), one way to maximize the functionality is to purchase a SanDisk slotRadio card.  About the cards:

Each SanDisk® slotRadio™ card includes 1,000 songs featuring artists from the Billboard® charts. Songs are preloaded onto a tiny card with handcrafted playlists that include hundreds of artists. Like a FM radio experience, you can lean back and let slotRadio do the heavy-lifting so you don’t have to download music song-by-song. Songs are played in sequence and are locked to the card. You can skip individual songs as many times as you like, or switch between playlists with a touch of a button. Simply insert a slotRadio™ card into the slotRadio player and enjoy music in an instant. It’s great music made effortless.

Because I already have a portable device, I passed this review on to my husband to try out for the past week and here are a few of his thoughts:

  • The Sansa Fuze is small, light and thin.  I am able to slip it into my pocket and take it to the gym without even noticing it is there.
  • The sound quality is excellent and radio antenna is strong.  The Fuze picks up local radio stations perfectly.
  • The VH1 slotRadio card (Classic) is great!  The Classic card included artists such as Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Elton John and Soundgarden.  I love the preset playlists….especially the “workout” list!  I want the Rock one next! For $39.99, it’s a good deal.
  • Navigating the system touchpad was intuitive and the screen was clear and bright.
  • I recommend this for someone looking for excellent quality on a budget.

Both my husband and I were impressed by the SanDisk Fuze and slotRadio cards.  This MP3 player is something we would definitely consider purchasing as a gift.

Green Works Walk to School Challenge!

Unfortunately, I can say that I have never walked to school.  Our house was always out of walking distance.  I did, however, walk home from school once in knee high water when the entire area flooded….not fun.  But, I always did envy the kids that got to walk home with their parents and I wish I could share that with my own daughters.  But again, it is just not possible.

I definitely see the value in walking to school not only for needed exercise but great quality time with your children.  I try to replicate that experience with my girls by turning off the radio on our morning drive and using the ten minute drive to talk about the upcoming day’s activities or whatever the mood brings.

Through the month of October, Green Works wants to encourage you to take the Walk to School Challenge with your children not only to spend precious minutes together, but to benefit your school as well!  Sign up on the Green Works Facebook page, log your footsteps and compete against other schools for the chance to win the $5,000 Green Grant! Your child can also win individual prizes for logging their walking or bicycling distances.

Spread the word around your school, get outside and start walking!  Good Luck!

Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse Test Drive: Part Two

Two weeks ago, I introduced you to Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse I received in conjunction with a test panel from Mom Central.  In that post, I admitted that I am not a huge fan of my teeth and that a long stint in braces destroyed the enamel on my teeth creating sensitivity and a predisposition to decay.  At my last dental exam, I had three cavities which is unfortunately not surprising.  So, I was very happy to take part in this test drive because I was willing to try anything to fight the problem.

For fourteen days, I have used the Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse twice a day.  I was able to incorporate the rinse into my daily routine by placing the bottle directly in front of my toothbrush.  In order to brush my teeth in the morning and at night, I physically had to touch the rinse which reminded me to add it to my routine.  This rinse claims to accomplish a few things: rebuilds enamel, freshens breath, fights cavities, kills germs, and cleans teeth all without the burning of alcohol.  While I cannot asses some of these claims because I am not a dentist, I can tell you that it did freshen my breath.  I found that the rinse did burn a little bit but this was expected because of my sensitive teeth.  That being said, it did burn less than other brands I have tried and I would be willing to continue using this product.   Thanks to Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse, I am much more confident going into my next dental exam which is November 30th (fingers crossed!).

Corn Refiners Association Demystifies High Fructose Corn Syrup

I will admit that when I grocery shop, I have a few priorities.  I want to be quick.  I want to save money.  I want to provide a balanced diet for my kids.  I try as best I can to read the labels of the products I buy, but when I have two kids in tow, this can provide a challenge.  Food labels on the front of the package make it easy for me.  Labels such as “Low fat” or “Less Sugar” generally catch my attention.

I have noticed that labels reading “No High Fructose Corn Syrup” have appeared in the food aisles after this sugar received media attention for being linked to obesity.  However, thanks to a recent webcast from Mom Central and Sweet Surprise, I am learning that high fructose corn syrup is no more likely to cause weight gain than sugar when used in moderation.  According to the Corn Refiners Association, high fructose corn syrup (corn sugar) is a natural substance made up of the same components of regular granulated sugar.  The components, fructose and glucose, are handled similarly by the body.  In fact, once absorbed into the bloodstream, sugar and high fructose corn syrup are indistinguishable according to the American Diabetic Association.

After taking a look in my pantry, I was surprised at how many foods contain corn sugar.  While I do want to provide healthy meals for my family and strive to keep any kind of sugar intake to a reasonable level, I believe balance is key.  It would be nearly impossible to rid my entire pantry of the high fructose corn syrup and honestly, I wouldn’t want to.  Everything in moderation.

Smucker’s Uncrustables

Now that school and extra-curricular activities have begun, our lives have gone from busy to busier!  My husband and I are doing a great deal of meal planning to try to keep the need to eat fast food to a minimum.  However, try as we might, some days are just too hectic to prepare a full meal.  So, I was excited about the opportunity to try out the Smucker’s Uncrustables with my girls.

Photobucket

This thaw and serve sandwich can be purchased in many varieties including peanut butter and strawberry jam or peanut butter on white or wheat, grape jam on white or wheat and peanut butter and honey on wheat.  My girls decided to try the strawberry option.  Every Tuesday, my little one goes to dance class which makes mealtime rushed.  This week, we decided to leave the frozen Uncrustable on the counter while we ran to dance class.  When we returned an hour later, the sandwich was thawed and ready to serve!  My girls loved the “pocket” sandwich because it was delicious and there was no crust.  I loved the sandwich because it was easy, fast and my girls ate the entire thing!

If you would like to try a box of Uncrustables, visit Smucker’s on September 24th and leave your best organizational or time saving tip to receive a coupon for a FREE box!  Only 400 coupons will be distributed!

Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse Test Drive: Part One

I would love to say that I love everything about myself.  But ever since a very young age, I have hated my teeth.  I needed braces in fifth grade which stayed on my teeth for five (and half) years.  While they made the alignment of my teeth so much better, the braces ruined the enamel and created a set of very sensitive teeth.  To this day, I get cavities very easily making dental visits something I dread.  It seems like no matter what I do, I have a cavity at every darn exam.  So, I am very excited to be one of several bloggers selected to test drive the new Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse.

I will admit that I am not a regular user of a mouth rinse.  Due to my sensitive teeth, I haven’t found one that doesn’t send pain through my teeth!  This makes me a little hesitant to use the new Crest Rinse, but it looks like the benefits could outweigh the negatives.  The rinse provides six benefits in one including rebuilding enamel, freshening breath, fighting cavities, killing germs, and cleaning teeth all without the burning of alcohol.  Including the rinse in my daily routine sounds like a great way to get a better check-up at my next dental visit!

Over the next two weeks, I will be using the rinse twice daily and will be back to report my findings!  Do you include a rinse in your daily routine?  Do you feel like it is beneficial?

Encourage your Little Scientist with KNOW Magazine!

KNOW MagazineIn Junior High, I had a really incredible Science Teacher.  Her teaching style got me really excited about Science and I wanted to know more by the time I got to high school.  It was there that I began my love of Biology, but other than becoming a Doctor, I wasn’t sure what I could do with that degree.  Fortunately, in college I learned about Microbiology and I was hooked!  Now, as a lab technician, I want to instill that same love of Science in my girls by exposing them to the concepts at any early age.

Through Mom Central, I just learned of a new Mad Science publication called KNOW Magazine.  Geared towards kids ages 6-9, exposes kids to age appropriate experiments, articles, games, puzzles and more!  I downloaded a free sample issue and sat down with my almost 6 year old.  She was intrigued by the “Up Close” section where they magnified the belly of a gecko!  She was also drawn the the section on planets and the “Home Lab” which offers exciting (and safe) experiments to try at home.

As a Mom, I am happy that the entire magazine is outside advertising free and combines educational articles with fun interactive puzzles that keep my child thinking logically.  There is also a creative aspect each month in the feature called “Comic Captions” where kids are shown a picture and can submit their funniest caption!

While my daughter is just learning to read, she definitely needed help reading this magazine.  But this provided nice quality time for the two of us while I got to share some of my own love of Science with her.  I definitely think that KNOW magazine would make a great holiday gift for any child ages 6-9.  A one year subscription (6 issues) can be purchased for $26.  For older kids, check out YES Mag!

PaperMate Plant-A-Pen: Review

So, you just read the title of this post and you are utterly confused.  Why on Earth would you plant a pen?  An ink pen?  I thought the same thing when I was asked to participate in the PaperMate Plant-A-Pen blog tour.  I guess I never really thought of what happens to pens and mechanical pencils after we throw them away, but it must be quite a mass of writing instruments!

PaperMate is doing it’s part to help the environment by coming out with a line of biodegradable products.  The line includes a pen and a mechanical pencil made up of corn based products.  The entire refill holder and the majority of the pen and pencil components will biodegrade in approximately one year when buried in soil or compost.

I thought this would be a great way to teach my girls about the little things we can do to help the environment!  Following the the instructions on the package, we disassembled the pen and threw away the inside parts.  I took them into the yard and we buried the outer casing while I talked to them about what it means to recycle.  They had a great time doing the outdoor activity!

If you are starting your back to school shopping, take a moment to consider the environment and try the new Paper Mate biodegradable pens and mechanical pencils!

Grill out with ConAgra Foods!

My husband and I both work full time, but because he is a teacher, he stays home with the kids in the Summer months.  I have to say that I love Summer!  With him home, life is much less stressful!  One of the things we love to do in the summer is grill.  Even the kids look forward to these dinners and my husband found a new barbeque recipe book that he his dying to try out.  Thanks to Mom Central and ConAgra Foods, we are able to put the finishing touches on our dinner!  From the press release:

hebrewMade with premium cuts of beef and no fillers, by-products, artificial flavors or colors, Hebrew National hot dogs provide a great solution for summer dinners. Topped with Hunt’s 100% Natural Ketchup (made with no high fructose corn syrup) or Gulden’s spicy brown mustard, you have all the makings of a classic summer dinner.

We were sent Hunt’s No High Fructose Corn Syrup Ketchup, Gulden’s Mustard, and coupons for Hebrew National Hot Dogs for review.  I placed the condiments on our table at our latest barbeque night.  My daughters LOVE ketchup and both immediately grabbed the bottle.  Neither child noticed a difference in the No High Fructose Corn Syrup version and the brand we normally use.  As a Mom, anytime I can reduce the amount of high fructose corn syrup in their diets, I am happy!

conagraHonestly, we don’t normally buy the Hebrew National brand of hotdogs, but gave them a try for this review.  My husband threw them on the grill and both kids (as well as my husband and myself) loved them.  We would definitely purchase these again!

Check out ConAgra products next time we are putting together a barbeque night for your family!
