BlogHer ’10: From the Big Easy to the Big Apple (part 2)
August 13, 2010 by admin
What a difference a year makes! Last year at BlogHer ’09, I was the new kid on the block. I wasn’t sure what to expect and just hoped to learn something valuable. That conference turned out to be a turning point for me as I met another review blogger and started a wonderful partnership, the Double Duty Divas. What began as a way to help moms who work outside the home network, quickly grew into a Review and Ad Network with over 200 members.
Fast-forward one year later to BlogHer ’10 and we were ready to hit the ground running. Again, I hoped to learn valuable skills at the conference, but this time I knew it was more about the connections and relationships with other bloggers and brands. And what’s the best way to network? Party! Cecelia, Renee and I tried to attend as many events as we could (and perhaps overscheduled ourselves!) in order to meet new friends, catch up with old ones and learn something in the process.
The first stop was American Girl where we enjoyed a relaxing lunch in the Café with dolls…yes, grown women with dolls. Don’t judge me. It was fun. After checking in at the hotel, we tried to catch a cab to the Social Luxe Lounge. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful and decided to try a Pedicab. Never.Again. I saw my life flash before my eyes, but we made it in one piece to the party. We all had the opportunity to get our hair and nails done, enjoy a relaxing shoulder massage (which we needed after that PediCab ride), and check out the new products from Avery, Ghirardelli (the new luxe milk chocolate was to die for) and Yummie Tummie. We ended the night by attending the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) party on the rooftop of the Empire Hotel where we learned all about safety in many common situations. The setting was gorgeous and the atmosphere was truly relaxing (I even got to watch an outdoor ballet performance by Juilliard!).
Believe it or not, I managed to do all of that before BlogHer officially began! On Friday, we started the day attending a meeting with my friend, Zachary from Coffee for Less. If you own a single cup coffee machine like the Keurig, you should definitely check out Coffee for Less to supply your K-cups! Because we were exhausted from the night before, we couldn’t wait to head to the Getting Gorgeous Event held by Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeny where I found my most favorite “Swag” of the conference, the MiracleBody jeans. I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and try the leggings….I am told that I can pull it off.
Now that I was feeling gorgeous, it was time to hit some sessions! I attended a “Pitch Me” session that was absolutely fabulous! I learned so much and intend to share it with you in another post. After touring the expo hall (the P&G Home Away from Home was stunning), we were ready to devour some cupcakes at “Sweets in the City” hosted by Complicated Mama and The Big Toy Book. It was here that I met Kelby Carr who was so nice and offered lots of great advice to Cecelia and I.
After getting a sugar high, we ran to the Robeez (pronounced Rob-eez…who knew?) event and finally the Christmas in August party hosted by Hallmark. The Hallmark event was certainly one of the highlights of the trip. Entering the penthouse, I was overwhelmed with the smells of the Holiday season. Here I discovered the Recordable Books from Hallmark and I just fell in love. Lots of good food, decorating cookies, pictures with Santa and mingling with friends made this party a real joy.
Saturday, we got the chance to host our own meet-up at Starbucks with our Double Duty Diva network. Coffee for Less and SnuggStuff provided the swag and everyone enjoyed their morning coffee while meeting the Divas. We took our morning drinks on the road to Scholastic where we learned all about the new releases and literacy initiative. I remember ordering books from the Scholastic catalog and now I love seeing the excitement in my daughter’s eyes when she comes home with her selections.
After lunch, we managed to squeeze in another session on Monetization and then it was off to dinner with Tide. For those of you who have read my blog for a while now know that Tide is one of my favorite brands. For obvious reasons, the Tide Loads of Hope project is near and dear to my heart and I cannot wait to work with them later this month for the 5 year anniversary.
Honestly, I have no idea how I managed to fit all of this in one short weekend. But looking back, I wouldn’t change one single thing. I think BlogHer ’10 was a success for me personally and professionally and has made me excited about the future of Experimental Mommy and the Double Duty Divas! Thanks again to Corky and Co. and Escalate Network for making my trip possible!
Nestle Family Summer Block Party: The Final Day!
I hope you have all had a great time at the Nestle Family Summer Block Party! I know I have loved checking out all the great summer tips from participating bloggers!

On this last day of the party, I thought I would leave you will one final backyard science experiment you can try with the kids. This lesson in density of liquids can be found at the Science is Fun website!
![]()
Several unopened cans of regular soda of different varieties, several unopened cans of diet soda of different varieties, a large aquarium/sink/ice chest, and water.
Fill the aquarium or sink almost to the top with water. Place a can of regular soda into the water. Make sure that no air bubbles are trapped under the can when you place it in the water. Does it sink or float? Repeat the experiment with a can of diet soda. Does it sink or float?
Why does one can sink, and the other can float?
The cans of soda have exactly the same volume, or size. But their density differs due to what is dissolved in the soda. Regular soda contains sugar as a sweetener. If you look at the nutrition facts on a can of regular soda, you will notice that it contains sugar…a lot of sugar. In some cases a 12 ounce can of regular soda will contain over 40 grams of sugar. Diet sodas, on the other hand, use artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. These artificial sweeteners may be hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, which means that less than a few grams of artificial sweetener is used in a can of diet soda. The difference in the amount of dissolved sweeteners leads to a difference in density. Cans of regular soda tend to be more dense than water, so they sink. Cans of diet soda are usually less dense than water, so they float.

Nestle Family Summer Block Party: Day 4
The summer in New Orleans is nothing if it isn’t HOT and HOTTER! While I love taking the kids outside to play, some days it is hard when the temperature is already 90 degrees at 8am! Today, I thought I would feature a great indoor science activity for those days when it’s just impossible to go outside!
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has put together a really great “cool science” site for kids! Some of the experiments that will satisfy just about any curious kid include “diving in to the miniature world with a microscope” and “specks, flecks and particles in the air.“ The site also features a really neat “Ask a Scientist” section for all those questions Mom and Dad just can’t answer. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is also a great resource for science fair projects!

Nestle Family Summer Block Party: Day 3
Day 3 already? The Nestle Family Summer Block Party is half over already! Have you been entering all the great giveaways on all five blogs?
Obviously, by looking at my blog, you have realized by now that science is a major part of my life. I love talking at career fairs and sharing the fun of science with those who may eventually venture into the field. One of the places I love to take my kids for hands-on experiences is the Louisiana Children’s Museum located right here in New Orleans. Who ever said New Orleans isn’t for kids?!? With so many hands-off places for little ones in this world, it’s nice to take my girls to a place that is completely kid friendly, fun and educational.
With over 30,000 square feet and more than 100 interactive exhibits, my kids LOVE this place! The girls love reading section, the supermarket, the pretend restaurant and of course the science exhibits! This weekend, the Louisiana Children’s Museum is hosting “Fetch! Beach Science” on Saturday, July 17th from 11:00am-3:00pm. From the website:
“Dive into the science of the beach. Do an experiment in the Atrium to find out why you can float better in salt water. Learn about the spirals of a sea shell and then create your own in Art Trek. Discover sand writings and make a sand bottle. Help measure the length of a blue whale in our architecture exhibit.”
Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend! And it’s even air-conditioned…BONUS!

For today’s Backyard Science Project, it’s time to get messy! Who doesn’t love a good volcano, right? I found a great protocol for a backyard volcano from FamilyEducation.com. Here’s how to get started:
![]()
Baking pan, Soda bottle (16 or 20 oz.), Moist soil, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 cup vinegar, Red food coloring
and the great outdoors!
Place the baking pan on the grass, and set the soda bottle in the middle of the pan. Mound and shape the moist soil around the bottle to form a mountain. Bring the soil right up to the top of the bottle’s opening, but don’t get the soil inside the bottle. Next, pour one tablespoon of baking soda into the bottle. Color one cup of vinegar with red food coloring and pour the colored vinegar into the bottle. Stand back and watch red foam spray out of the top and down the mountain like lava from a volcano!

Your invited to the Nestle Summer Block Party!
One of the things I love about Summer is relaxing and enjoying time with friends. Who doesn’t love a good Summer Block Party, right…. food, friends, sun and did I mention food?!? It’s the perfect way to unwind, meet your neighbors and catch up with the people you love! For this entire week, I cordially invite you to join me (and four of my blogging neighbors) at the Nestle Family Summer Block Party!

Each week, all five blogs including 24/7 Moms, Classy Chaos, Cutie Booty Cakes, Momma Findings and myself will be featuring some great summer tips and hosting some incredible Nestle Giveaways (you do NOT want to miss what I have in store for you on Friday!). Here at Experimental Mommy (aka The Not-So-Blog), I will be writing about fun backyard science projects you can do with your kids this Summer (very appropriate, right!?). Today’s tip courtesy of the “Science is Fun” website:
While searching the internet for some fun projects, I found a neat way to teach your kids about Carbon Dioxide. I know, I know, you are thinking, “How can carbon dioxide be fun?” But what if I told you that carbon dioxide can make raisins dance?!? Now, we have the kids attention!
![]()
A can of colorless soda (e.g., 7-Up or Sprite), a tall, clear glass or plastic cup and several fresh raisins.
Pour the can of soda into the tall glass. Notice the bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. The bubbles are carbon dioxide gas released from the liquid. Next, drop 6 or 7 raisins into the glass and watch the raisins for a few seconds. Describe what is happening to the raisins. Do they sink or float? Keep watching; what happens in the next several minutes?
Raisins are denser than the liquid in the soda, so initially they sink to the bottom of the glass. The carbonated soft drink releases carbon dioxide bubbles. When these bubbles stick to the rough surface of a raisin, the raisin is lifted because of the increase in buoyancy. When the raisin reaches the surface, the bubbles pop, and the carbon dioxide gas escapes into the air. This causes the raisin to lose buoyancy and sink. This rising and sinking of the raisins continues until most of the carbon dioxide has escaped, and the soda goes flat. Furthermore, with time the raisin gets soggy and becomes too heavy to rise to the surface.

GummyLump Toys: Review and Giveaway
GummyLump will be able to provide a wonderful play food set by Melissa and Doug that will not only be fun for my girls to play with, but encourage pretend play and creativity.
One Melissa and Doug Birthday Cake play food set and two excited girls with growing imaginations. About GummyLump:
“Toys that make sweet memories…We are dedicated to retailing only the highest quality and most unique toys, building blocks, and puzzles available. Our goal is to bring you the best selection of creative & educational toys for children Ages 0-6. Many of our wooden toys and building blocks are past award winners. We are proud that many of our toys have won prestigious awards. We feel that these honors are a testament to the quality of our toys as well as an endorsement of their play value!”
My daughters were fortunate to receive two Melissa & Doug play food sets this holiday season (the pizza set and the cookie set). I can honestly say that they have played with them more than any other toy they received. So, when GummyLump asked us to try out the Melissa & Doug Birthday Cake set, my girls were more than eager to be guinea pigs!
Because Lily’s birthday is this month, she generally wants to celebrate just about every day. The birthday cake set is perfect to help her get in gear for her upcoming special day. The 30 piece set includes 6 slices of cake, candles, toppings, a serving spatula and plate all neatly placed in a storage box. The pieces velcro together and allow the girls to “slice” the cake and serve. The Happy Birthday decoration is removable so the cake can help celebrate just about any event.
We were so pleased with our new GummyLump toy that I decided to surf their site a bit to see what else they had to offer. GummyLump has many of the latest hot toys while still offering the classic toys. Looking for a ride on toy? Check out this cool Plasma Car!
Both of my girls loved playing with their new Melissa & Doug play Birthday Cake set from GummyLump! The play food set went perfectly in their pretend kitchen and inspired many birthday parties complete with singing! The set allows your child to bake, decorate, slice and serve any kind of cake to their party guests.
GummyLump is now offering 20% off ALL Melissa & Doug toys! Plus, if you buy 3 Melissa & Doug play food sets, you get the 4th one FREE! And if that wasn’t enough, you can get FREE shipping on orders over $75! Have an upcoming birthday party or just want to start shopping for Christmas 2010? Take advantage of the sale now!!
