Geek Out with Netflix {March Edition}

This post was written by the Experimental Mommy.  I am a member of the Netflix Steam Team and receive a complimentary subscription but all opinions remain 100% honest.

I am so excited to announce that I am part of the Netflix #StreamTeam.  What that means for you is that I will be sharing what’s hot on Netflix and what we are watching, too.  With March being Science Fair Month, I thought it would be fun to share some Science themed shows you can stream on Netflix for inspiration.

My daughter participated in her very first Science Fair this year with her project titled, “To Eat or Not To Eat.”  I am sure the fact that I worked in a lab for 17 years really motivated my daughter to do a project as she has had many questions about my work.  But shows like, “How Stuff Works” and “Magic School Bus” really peaked her interest and introduced her to the Scientific Method.

If your child is entering a Science Fair soon, check out some project ideas and then consider streaming some of the following shows to get your creative juices flowing.

For the older kids:

1. How Stuff Works
2. How Do They Do It
3. Is It Possible?
4. Build It Bigger
5. How the Universe Works
6. Extreme Engineering
7. Mythbusters

 And for the younger kids:

1. Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius
2. Peep and the Big Wide World
3. Magic School Bus: All Dried Up
4. Animal Mechanicals
5. Wild Kratts

Tell me, what are you streaming this month?

Be Prepared for Winter Weather with Rayovac

This post was written by the Experimental Mommy.  While a sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% mine.

In New Orleans, we are no strangers to severe weather.  Every New Orleanian knows that June 1st begins Hurricane season and chances are we already have our evacuation and preparedness plans in place.  But this year, we traded our flip flops and tank tops for heavy coats and scarves when a hard freeze hit our area.

Ice blanketed our lawns and streets and we had no idea what to do as this is rare in Southeast Louisiana.  Fortunately, Rayovac has some great tips for being prepared before a severe winter storm heads your way.  When power was lost in our neighborhood, I was very happy to be armed with my Rayovac batteries and flashlights.

I love my Rayovac Value Bright LED Flashlights.  With 58 lumens and 40 hours of battery time, I won’t have to sit in the dark during any of our regular or irregular storms!  The smaller size is perfect to put next to my daughters’ beds at night in case of an emergency situation.

Rayovac wants to help keep you safe during a severe weather situation. Use code LIGHTS15 to receive 15% off ALL lights  plus FREE shipping on orders over $25 (excluding bundles).

Get Your Dance On with Kmart Layaway

This is a sponsored post. I am a Kmart blogger, though all opinions are my own.

If you could peek into the lives of New Orleanians right now, you would see one giant party.  Tomorrow is Mardi Gras, but we have been in the spirit for many days.  Throwing beads, eating delicious foods, spending time with friends and dancing in the street are only a few activities you don’t want to miss!

At any given time, on any given street corner, you will find people strutting their dance moves with the Wobble, the Dougie and even the Kmart Layaway Dance.  Never heard of the last one?  It’s simply guided by that feeling you get when you pay off your Kmart Layway and take your beloved purchase home.  Watch some Kmart customers express their layaway love:

So why are they dancing?  At Kmart, Layaway doesn’t start and end with the holidays. You can use Kmart Layaway all year round for celebrations such as birthdays, re-decorating or baby gifts. In addition, Kmart Layaway is available online and in stores. It’s simple: pick out the items you want, start with a down payment, make payments every two weeks (online or in store) and take your items home with you after your final payment (cue: Layaway dance)!

Refresh Your Home with Kmart Semi Annual Home Sale

This is a sponsored post. I am a Kmart blogger, though all opinions are my own.

Raise your hand if you wish Jack Frost would pack up and move on.  For us here in Southeast Louisiana, we had some very cold temperatures this winter and even some ice.  We are ready to break out our tank tops and buy a new line up of flip flops to welcome Spring.

While giving my wardrobe a seasonal update makes me happy, refreshing my home decor really livens up the place and gets me in the mood for Spring.  I have always wished that my home would be one of those in magazines who decorate for every holiday or change of season, but redecorating every time a new trend arises can be cruel to your wallet.

Fortunately, Kmart’s Semi Annual Home Sale helps you achieve the look you want for less! At the Kmart Semi Annual Home Sale, you’ll find major savings on décor and furniture for your bed, bath, living room and kitchen. From bright colors to fresh finishes, you’ll save on everything you need to take your home from winter blues to stylish in spring. And with the points you’ll earn on redecorating, you’ll be able to redeem them on next season’s decorating trends (whatever they may be)!

With the kids stuck inside due to winter storms, I am sure your house (like mine) could use a major refresher.  It’s time to win back your home! Watch the cute Kmart commercial to learn more and don’t forget  to take advantage of the exclusive Shop Your Way Member Offer where Members Get $5 Back in Points on Every $30 Spent in Home.

Help Your School with Labels for Education

This post was written in partnership with Labels for Education. All opinions remain 100% my own.

With the cuts to our educational programs on the rise, our children’s classrooms can use any form of donations.  I know many schools lack art supplies, playground equipment or musical instruments to inspire our children.  That’s why I love supporting programs such as Labels for Education.

By simply purchasing one of the participating products (there are over 2,500 to choose from), cutting the UPCs and Beverage/Sauce Caps, and submitting to your school’s coordinator, your school will accumulate points which can be used to purchase items for the classroom.  With participating brands such as Campbell’s, Pepperidge Farm, BIC and Post Foods, I bet you could find many Labels for Education hiding in your pantry right now!  I know our school band would love to get enough points for the acoustic guitar!

Labels for Education is celebrating its 40th Anniversary – that’s 40 years of rewarding schools across the country with educational equipment.  Now, more than 60,000 schools have registered to take part in the program.  Our school makes collecting points fun by hosting class competitions.  The class that brings in the most points wins a dress down day!  What kid doesn’t want the chance to ditch the school uniform for jeans and a comfy tee?

Don’t forget about helping your school library!  The Labels for Education Book Bonanza provides schools registered with Labels for Education the opportunity to earn FREE Scholastic books (up to 40 books).  By turning in the participating UPCs and Beverage/Sauce caps to your school coordinator between January 6th-March 31st, you can help your school earn free books!

What does your school need the most?

Get Lucky in the Shop Your Way HDTV Sweeps

This is a sponsored post. I am a Sears blogger, though all opinions are my own.

When hubby and I married about 14 years ago, we owned a 12″ TV.  Yep, a 12″ TV.  We were thrilled to upgrade to a 27″ when we moved into our first apartment and finally upsized to a 37″ when we purchased our first home.  We were totally happy with out TV for many years until we happened to window shop at a local electronics store and caught a glimpse of what is on the market today.

Holy Big Screen TV, Batman.

Is bigger always better?  I don’t know about you, but I am totally willing to test that theory.  Fortunately, the Shop Your Way SWEEPS gives you a chance to win one of the top prizes, a 65” 3D LED HDTV including shipping, accessories and installation (a nearly $4,000 value).  Just think, you could catch up on this year’s award shows or watch how your basketball bracket fares in March!  Shop Your Way always has multiple SWEEPS to pick from with over 40,000 winners so far (and trust me, they’re addicting)!  Besides the big screen TV, the prizes range from points to use at Sears or Kmart to diamonds and dream vacations.

So what have you got to lose (besides about 5 minutes of your time surfing the internet)? Enter here for your chance to win on Shop Your Way SWEEPS before 2/28/14. No purchase necessary. Official Rules here.

Cruising Santa Barbara in the 2014 Toyota Highlander

This post was written by Renee of What Mommies Need.  Travel was provided.

Recently, I was invited to attend the Media Preview for the new 2014 Toyota Highlander.  While I was unable to attend, one of my best blogging friends, Renee from What Mommies Need, attended in my absence.  Below you will find her account of the trip.

I was lucky enough to escape the unseasonable frigid temperatures of New Orleans and head West to Santa Barbara to check out Toyota’s newly redesigned 2014 Highlander. Now I will admit up front that I don’t know a lot about engines and such, but what I look for in a vehicle is comfort, safety and style.  What I found is the new Highlander has plenty of all three!

This new redesign was done with the active family in mind and it shows! Some of the new features include:

  • Increased cargo capacity, and smart storage solutions throughout the interior cabin.
  • In-dash shelf with a pass thru to USB/12V plug-ins for easy cable management
  • 24.5L center console that can hold oversized items like a large purse/bag (or 60 juice boxes with room to spare)
  • Available Rear Seat Blu-ray® DVD Entertainment system
  • Second and third row air vents with available three-zone automatic climate control
  • 2nd row sunshades (XLE & Limited grades)
  • 6.1-inch high resolution touch-screen display standard on LE and LE Plus, with an 8-inch high resolution touch-screen display standard on XLE and Limited grades
  • Heated and ventilated front seats on the Limited grade with an available heated steering wheel and heated second row seats
  • Available panoramic moonroof
  • Standard backup camera and our next generation of Entune® Audio
  • Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Rear Parking Assist Sonar
  • An available Driver Technology Package that includes a Pre- Collision system with Dynamic Radar
  • Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Automatic High Beam Headlights, and Safety ConnectTM

The first thing I noticed about this vehicle is the stylish design. Let’s face it, I am a mom, but I have not crossed over to the mini-van and still wish to drive something fun. While the new Highlander is an eight-passenger vehicle, I feel like it looks cool and even sporty. I was even able to park this vehicle in a compact spot with room to spare.

My next big thing is safety and this SUV has it all and then some. As you can tell from the list above, Toyota has kept their high level of safety with this vehicle and I think they even kicked it up a few notches. I love the Pre-Collision system and Blind Spot Monitors!

Now, I want to talk about the interior. My husband is 6’4″ and I have two growing boys, so we need leg room. I was so happy to see that even with the passenger seat pushed all the way back, there was plenty of leg room in the second row. Not as much in the third, but that is not a priority for my family. The rest of the interior was beautiful and as a mom, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the in dash shelf, which is the perfect place for cell phones, and all the other junk we are handed while driving around the kiddos.

So, I have told you all about how it looks, what makes it safe, and what makes me happy as a mom, but now I am going to talk about how it drives. I was lucky enough to drive this beauty around Santa Barbara and even though I had only a navigation system to guide me, I was completely comfortable. This SUV drives quietly and so smooth. It was almost like I was driving a sedan, but with so much more space. Honestly, I wanted to drive it all the way back to NOLA. I am definitely keeping this vehicle on our short list when we have to go car shopping!

Pricing for the 2014 Highlander starts at $29,215 and is available in a Hybrid version. For more information about this vehicle, visit

Prepping for the Winter Weather with Rayovac

This post is written by the Experimental Mommy and brought to you by Rayovac.  All opinions remain 100% mine.

For those of you who live in the North, this post may be a bit funny.  But to us Southerners, this “polar vortex” has created a Winter Storm that has closed roads, businesses and schools for the past 2 days.  So, what actually constitutes a winter storm here in New Orleans?  Well, it’s been right about 32 degrees and we have had about 1/2″ accumulation of ice!  It’s the Sneauxpacolypse!

All of the local news stations are warning that ice on tree branches could cause them to snap and take down our power lines.  I actually got a text from our energy company telling us to prepare to be without power for 3-5 days!  Yikes.  Fortunately, as a Rayovac Power Blogger, I have my trusty box of batteries to the rescue!

We have replaced batteries in our flashlights and radio and have started charging up all of the Rayovac Rechargeables in order to prepare for the worst.  No darkness for this family! And to make sure we can stay in touch with family and friends, I have my Rayovac Portable Power ready to go in case my cell phone or iPad needs a boost.  Of course, I have firewood,  hot chocolate and a King Cake, too (the real essentials).

How do you prepare for a winter storm?
