What’s on Your Appliance Wish List?

This post was written by the Experimental Mommy and brought to you by P.C. Richard & Son. All opinions remain 100% mine.

As a Mom of two who not only works full time outside the home but runs a blog and two successful businesses in her “spare” time, I value anything that can give me a few extra precious moments to spend with my family.  When finally getting some downtime, the last thing I want to do is clean house, spent countless hours on laundry or vacuuming every inch of the carpet.  I realize housework is a necessary evil but finding the right appliances can cut your time and hassle drastically leaving more quality time with the family.

P.C. Richard & Son is Americas #1 family owned and operated appliance, electronics and mattresses store offering a huge selection of items that would no doubt make my life easier. Just a few items on my Appliance Wish List are:

  • KitchenAid 24″ Built-In Dishwasher can fit 14 place settings in a single load. It’s like the superhero of dishwashers!
  • With the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina around the corner, it should come as no surprise that this New Orleanian included the Pulsar 10,000 Watt 4 Cycle Propane and Gas Generator on a list of “must-haves.”

Sippy Cup Solutions: Testing Avent’s New Range of Toddler Cups

This post was written by Linzy of Crawfish Tales on behalf of Experimental Mommy. While a sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% honest.

With my older child we struggled in the transition from bottle to sippy cup. I could not find a sippy cup that she liked nor could I find one that was really truly spill proof. She ended up going from bottle to cups with a straw. She was fine with it and that worked for her. But straws are not spill proof either so that didn’t really solve that problem for me.
Testing Avent's new sippy cups
Now, with number two I am going to do better research on the sippy cups available on the market. In the nearly four years since my first one was at the sippy cup stage, I am sure there have been many new products introduced to the market and new technology.

I was asked to test the new Avent sippy cups that hit the market in January of this year. They come in the four stages of cup transition and they range in price from $6.99 for an individual cup to $12.99 for a two-pack and are available at Babies R Us, Amazon, Target, Walmart and Drugstore.com.

Here is the breakdown of the new products:
Stage 1 is for babies around four months old as they learn to take and hold the bottle independently. We are using the Avent Naturals bottle line so the new Philips Avent My Trainer Cup with the same soft spout Natural nipple is excellent for my little one. She is already familiar with that nipple so when I gave her the cup for the first time, she was already comfortable. She enjoyed the easy to use handles.

Stage 2 is for babies who are to transition away from the bottle nipple to a traditional sippy cup top. However, in my experience I have found that the transition to the hard top in the new design can be sometimes too drastic. So the Philips Avent My Penguin Sippy Cup and the Philips Avent My Easy Sippy Spout Cups come with both the hard and the soft spouts to help ease that transition. The easy to use handles follow the same penguin cup shape design that the stage 1 cup had which allows baby to feel more comfortable with the new product.

Stage 3 is for the growing toddler. This is for the baby who has mastered the sippy cup and is ready to take the leap into a straw cup. This new shape expands drinking skills with the Philips Avent My Twist ‘n Sip Straw Cup. The silicone straw that stays clean with the twist lid keeps it clean on the go. Since I didn’t have this option with my first little one who preferred straws, I am excited about this new product.

Stage 4 is the big news. This is the first product of its kind. The Philips Avent My Natural Drinking Cup is going to change the way that children about a year and up learn how to use a real cup. Once your kiddo has mastered the sippy cup and the straw you don’t want to hand them an open cup to roam around with. You would probably be cleaning up after them all the time. But with this new cup they can still master the drinking from a cup skill without the mess. Here is how it works. The lip-activated rim allows toddlers to drink like a grown-up, from 360 degrees around the cup, while an internal leak-proof valve prevents spilling. Genius!

To help you learn which might be the best fit for your toddler, Avent teamed up with Scholastic to create “Sip, Sip, Hooray,” a story of several toddler friends and a mischievous Mama “Sippopotomus” who’s hunting for the perfect sippy cup for Baby “Sippo” (you can even download a digital copy here).

While my little on is still mastering stage one, I am excited about the cups that will grow with her as she transitions from bottle to cup. I am sure I will blink and she will be hold enough for stage four soon enough!

Is your little one ready for the transition? One Experimental Mommy reader will win the full Avent toddler cup range and a copy of “Sip, Sip, Hooray!” Enter below:

Encouraging Summer Adventures with Netflix’s Dragons: Race to the Edge

This post was written by the Experimental Mommy. I am a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam however all opinions are my own.

When the last school bell rings and Summer officially begins, our family can’t wait to start our adventure. With no tight schedules, homework or dance lessons, we are free to go wherever our heart takes us….with one caveat…my seven year old is not a fan of the unknown.

From new foods to new clothes, it can take some convincing to get her to try new things. So, I knew our Summer Adventure to Nashville, Tennessee would be a little outside her comfort zone. Thankfully, our plane had wifi and we were able to comfort her with an old friend, Netflix.

Because she loved the movie, How to Train Your Dragon, I directed her to the new Netflix original series, Dragons: Race to the Edge featuring Hiccup and Toothless. Soaring beyond their home on the island of Berk in search of new dragons, the series introduces some of the most exciting dragons yet, each with its own amazing abilities — shock waves, cannon balls and fire blasts, just to name a few.

Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 8.06.02 AM

With the magical Dragon Eye, an artifact Hiccup finds aboard an abandoned ship, Hiccup learns there is more outside the confines of Berk, and that a little curiosity and determination can make every day an exciting journey. In Hiccup’s own words, “this changes everything.”

What a great message for my little one as we flew to a new State in search of fun family experiences! To her credit, she was a trooper! Trying new things like an Alpine Slide, water rides, roller coasters and even some new foods was way outside of her comfort zone but she enjoyed the adventure!

Reduce the Red Nose with Scotties Tissue

This post was written by contributor, Erin, of the Experimental Mommy. While a sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% honest.

I am so tired of using tissues that make your nose red, irritated, raw, or hurt. During the summer in Louisiana I feel like I use tissues every single day because of allergies. The pollen count is so high that just stepping outside makes your nose start running.  Have you tried these allergy fighting tips from Everyday Health?

  • Find out what you are allergic to and avoid the triggers
  • Wear sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes
  • Use Dust mite covers on beds and pillows
  • Keep your house as dust free as possible

Try as you might, sometimes avoiding allergy symptoms is futile. Working in an allergy clinic, I see this firsthand and I can tell you that we go through tissues like crazy. I, like our patients, am so tired of buying and trying all of the different types in the stores in order to find one that will not hurt or make my nose raw. That is, until I found Scotties Facial Tissues. They are amazingly soft, gentle, and hypoallergenic. When the company says “Soft as a Kitten” they are not lying!

Scotties Tissues

Scotties tissues, produced by the Irving Consumer Products, are made from new wood fibers from the J.D. Irving forests from both hard and softwood trees. One important thing about Scotties is that they are ink and dye free making them hypoallergenic. One of my favorite things about the product is that Irving Consumer Products is a family owned company committed to managing its operations in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner, which makes it a company I am proud to give business to.

But don’t take my word for it! Test it for yourself and see that the Scotties brand delivers kitten like softness, strength, and value in every box. The product is environmentally considerate and the company is dedicated to responsible forestry so everyone can feel good about supporting the company. The Tissues are sold in numerous stores and can be purchased online as well.

Making the World #BetterforBaby with Pampers

This post was written by Linzy of Crawfish Tales. While a sample was received, all opinions remain 100% mine.

At iRetreat in New Orleans, I had the chance to see the unveiling of the Pampers Better for Baby campaign. It is a program that recognizes how babies have the ability to bring out the best in all of us and that is why we should do our part to make life better for them.

Screen Shot 2015-07-05 at 9.23.11 PMAs part of the campaign, Pampers is unveiling a video that celebrates all the profound ways babies change the world around them for the better – and in turn asks families to pledge how they will make life #BetterForBaby. Disclaimer: grab a tissue, it’s a definite tear jerker.

In order to do their part to make the World better for baby, Pampers has supported the happy, healthy development of babies for the last 50 years. Pampers is committed to doing their small part through  commitments including:

  • protecting premature babies
  • helping families in need through product donations
  • preventing maternal and neonatal tetanus
  • reducing their environmental impact.

In fact, at the launch of this #BetterforBaby campaign, Pampers is making a significant donation to each of their charity partners (Graham’s Foundation, UNICEF and Feeding America).

The generous actions of this brand who really gets behind and supports the consumer really got me thinking. What was I going to pledge? How can I make life better for baby?  While I can’t do anything on such a large scale like Pampers does, I can do things in my own home. Babies may be little, but they have this extraordinary power to bring out the best in us and in turn, change the world for the better. So I pledged to do the following three things:

  1. Take care of my health because a healthy mom means a happier mom.
  2. To maximize my family time because I can’t get these moments back.
  3. To be a positive support for other moms and not contribute to mom shaming.

Screen Shot 2015-07-05 at 9.24.23 PM

I really enjoyed the experience to reflect and determine what I could pledge to do my share. If you are ready to make your pledge, I encourage you to visit Pampers YouTube and Facebook pages and watch the Hush Little Baby video. Celebrate how babies bring out the best in all of us as you think about what your own pledge will be.

If you want to join others making their pledges, check out the Pampers #BetterforBaby Twitter Party: hosted by @iConnectIM (formerly Double Duty Divas).

Why We Love the Bubula Steel Diaper Pail

This post was written by Linzy of Crawfish Tales. While a product was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% honest.

Since it has been four years since I had my first baby, there have been two changes in my baby gear status. One, it either didn’t survive the first child or two, there have been revolutionary changes to make a product better than the one that I had.

One instance in this situation is the diaper pail. With the first child I had a popular brand that existed on the market. At the time it was innovative and did the job. However I never had the trash bag refills stocked when I needed them. And the refills were just another niche baby expense.

With baby number two, thankfully there have been advances in the diaper pail. Now there is a product on the market that takes standard trash bags! Hallelujah!

Screen Shot 2015-07-05 at 8.46.38 PM

The Bubula Stainless Steel Diaper Pail is the answer. In my opinion, here are the best features:

  • The Bubula Steel Diaper Pail is made of steel and aluminum construction, so it does not absorb odors like plastic pails.
  • An air-tight lid prevents odors, while strong and flexible rubber seals prevent leaks and keep odors locked in.
  • Bubula’s larger container size holds 50% more diapers than other leading brands, which extends bag life.
  • You can pick from 7 colors to coordinate with your style and nursery design.
  • The Bubula Diaper Pail is super sturdy. Because of its design, it is not top heavy like some competitors which is great as baby becomes more mobile.

And, did I mention that you can use regular trash bags? So that means no special line items for custom trash bag refills on the Target list.

Screen Shot 2015-07-05 at 8.46.13 PM

I wish this one was foot peddle operated like other versions but I am happy to trade that for the list of features that make this diaper pail far more innovative.

If you are like me, before I had a child I wasn’t quite sure what you needed a diaper pail for. Why didn’t you just throw it in the regular trash can? Well a couple of weeks in to baby number one, I learned that the hard way. You need something right at the end of the changing table to toss and go. You have a baby on your hands, that now needs to be washed and you don’t need to be parading a disgusting diaper around the house. Plus, if you throw a dirty diaper in a regular trash can, the smell will haunt you. Maybe not at first….but once they eat baby food, it is downhill from there.

Dance Into Plenti Rewards #PlentiTogether

I’m participating as a blogger ambassador for the Plenti program, operated by American Express.

It’s June! And if you are a dance Mom, you know what that means….it’s recital season! With two dancing Divas in my home, the upcoming days are sure to be filled with extra rehearsals, costume alterations, and last minute shopping trips.  As a former dance teacher, I absolutely love spending this time with my daughters, but I do not love how expensive it can get.

Fortunately there is a Rite Aid nearby that stocks just about everything I need to make an emergency dance recital kit!  Bobby pins, hair nets, gel, hair spray, ponytail holders, mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, deodorant, scissors, clear nail polish (for stocking runs), and snacks filled with protein are absolute essentials. While each of these items is not expensive on their own, they can certainly add up, especially when you have two dancers.

The fact that Rite Aid is close to my home is only one of the reasons I head straight there for dance recital must haves.  I know I can always find great prices and I can use my Plenti rewards card and rack up points for future purchases. Have you heard about Plenti?

Plenti is free to join and is a new loyalty program that allows shoppers to earn and redeem rewards points across some of their favorite brands. The loyalty coalition program — the first of its’ kind in the U.S. – boasts a roster that includes AT&T, ExxonMobil, Macy’s, Nationwide Insurance, Rite Aid, Direct Energy, Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Hulu.

Did you know that nearly 72 percent of Americans say they would prefer a rewards program that allows them to shop at many stores versus a single brand according to a recent research study?

In my last post, I showed you how incredibly easy Plenti is to use. Have you joined yet?  Are you earning rewards on things you were already shopping for every day? Don’t forget that you can earn points regardless of payment method (credit, cash or debit, etc.). Just show your Plenti Card at check out!

Summer Family Road Trip Streaming with Netflix #StreamTeam

This post is written by the Experimental Mommy in partnership with Netflix as a member of the #StreamTeam.

School is officially out for Summer and I couldn’t have three happier kids. Ok, so I only have two kids but my hubby is a teacher and he is thrilled about vacation, too.  Because the school year is so hectic, we can often lose sight of the importance of connecting as a family so summer is perfect to make up for lost time.

My husband and I try to give my kids educational and worthwhile experiences over the summer that will bring us together as a family. Fortunately, we live in New Orleans which is full of culture and easy to find. Staycations are a family favorite but sometimes we hit the road for long weekend getaways.

While we plan lots of quality time together during our vacation, the road trip can sometimes be long and cumbersome but Netflix can help fill the hours till we arrive at our destination. Here are a few of our Road Trip favorites:

1. Liv and Maddie: My girls are so excited that Liv and Maddie Season 1 has finally made it’s way to Netflix. The enjoy watching the comedy surrounding this TV family with twin girls!

2. H20 Mermaid Adventures: My youngest daughter is ALL about mermaids this Summer so naturally this show has caught (and kept) her attention.

3. Crash and Bernstein: Who doesn’t love puppets, right?

4. Life With Boys: My tween adores this show and is thrilled that Season 2 has made it’s way to Netflix.

What are you streaming on your summer road trips?

Reward Yourself with Plenti

I am participating as a blogger ambassador for the Plenti program, operated by American Express.

It’s official! School is out for summer and the kids (plus my hubby who is a teacher) are in full celebration mode. My husband spent last week getting our new pool set up and ready for this past Memorial Day weekend. My job? It’s always about getting the family ready for a fun and relaxing weekend together.

Like every weekend, before we can get to the fun and relaxing part, I have to get through the organizing and expensive part.  Swimsuits, sunscreen, pool toys, goggles, BBQ tools, food and drinks made up only part of my Memorial Day holiday shopping list this year so finding the best deal is a high priority. One of my favorite ways to save (as you can tell by looking at my key ring) is to take part in loyalty programs that reward you for shopping, but keeping up with different programs can get confusing.

Fortunately, some of my favorite shopping haunts have become part of one consolidated rewards program called Plenti. While operated by American Express, Plenti is a coalition loyalty program that accepts any form of payment, and that just like most regular retailer loyalty programs, you will receive a physical card after enrollment that you can swipe at purchase to earn points.

Of course, you are going to want to start earning points as soon as possible so let me tell you how to get started.

  • Sign up for your free account at http://www.plenti.com
  • Shop at Plenti partners which include AT&T, ExxonMobil, Macy’s, Nationwide Insurance, Rite Aid, Direct Energy, Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Hulu plus an array of online retailers as well
  • Earn points on purchases you are making to use towards savings on future shopping trips. For example, if you are going on a weekend trip, rent a car with Enterprise and earn points to use towards purchasing a fun new swimsuit at Macy’s!

I decided to start racking up points while crossing off items on my weekend shopping list. To make sure I found the best deals, I downloaded the Plenti app onto my iPhone before heading out the door. My first stop was Rite Aid for some backyard essentials so I checked the app for special deals at Rite Aid and noticed that purchasing my favorite sunscreen would earn me 100 Plenti points!

Pulling up at Rite Aid, the Plenti loyalty program was advertised in many places making it hard to miss! I found the advertised sunscreen, bug repellant, allergy medicine and some nail polish (you have to have cute pool ready toes, right?) and headed for the register. Pulling up the Plenti app, I handed my phone to the Rite Aid employee who scanned my card to be sure I received the rewards points for my purchase. Sure enough, I did indeed save money on my purchase AND earned 100 Plenti Points. Super easy!

Next stop? Macy’s! As much as I hate shopping for swimsuits, it must be done. And if it must be done, I might as well earn a reward for trying on swimsuits and looking at myself in a room full of mirrors under florescent lighting. Wish me luck!

#ImBornTo Support the March of Dimes

This post was written by the Experimental Mommy in partnership with The Motherhood and March of Dimes. All opinions are 100% my own.

As one of 39 Moms (one for each week of a full-term pregnancy), I have loved being part of a team of bloggers to help raise awareness for the incredible things March of Dimes has (and continues to) accomplish with your donations. The #ImBornTo campaign has helped shine a spotlight on the fact that in the United States, one baby is born prematurely every minute and approximately 72 children die each day before reaching their first birthday. This fight to save babies and help all moms have healthy, full-‐term pregnancies has been the focus of the March of Dimes’ mission for the last several decades.

Recently, I hosted a few friends at my home to let them know about the amazing work done by March of Dimes and how exactly  they could help fulfill their mission. Over some sweet Southern tea and dessert, I shared with them a few ways they could be a part of the solution.

From Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, the March of Dimes encourages consumers to shop, donate or take part in partner promotions to support the cause. Each partner including Martha Stewart, Bon Ton, Mud Pie, KMart, Alex and Ani, eBay, AE Jewelers, and Blue Rhino have different promotions to support the cause and you can help by simply shopping the deals!

Need more reasons to shop? Support of the March of Dimes last year alone provided 15,700 babies lifesaving surfactant therapy, developed by March of Dimes researchers, and gave 90,000 families with a newborn in intensive care comfort and information through NICU Family Support®.

What will you do to help babies reach their full potential?
