Fact: I am turning 40 in a few short months. Fiction: I eat healthy and get plenty of exercise. With my upcoming birthday, I feel like I need to pay closer attention to my lifestyle in order to stay healthy longer. As a female, I need pay close attention to my calcium take which should be around 1000mg a day.
Did you know that almost 70% of women, on average, are calcium deficient? However, that number jumps significantly for teen girls where 86% do not get enough calcium in their daily diets. This is critical because 95% of bone building happens by age 20. If your body is not getting enough calcium it begins to take it from the bones, decreasing bone mineral density which can eventually lead to osteopenia and osteoporosis.
So what can you do to in order to have healthy bones?
- Obtaining an adequate daily dose of calcium from your diet
- Regular bone strengthening exercises
- Supplementing when diet is not enough
When supplementing becomes essential, consider Viactiv®, the #1 doctor-recommended calcium chew. I recently received two canisters of Viactiv® Calcium Chews in milk chocolate and caramel varieties and provides 100% of the daily recommended amount of calcium plus vitamins D3 and K. Because I am self-proclaimed caramel fanatic, I tried this one first. I love that the supplement is individually wrapped so I can throw them in my purse for my on-the-go lifestyle. I really liked the flavor and it was much better than trying to swallow a bulky pill.
My oldest daughter is entering her preteen years and I am doing my best to make her aware of a healthy lifestyle. By looking on the Viactiv website, I learned that girls ages 9-18 should be banking 1300mg of calcium a day. Fortunately, my daughter loves milk, but I need to start monitoring to make sure she is getting her daily requirement. As a dancer, she wants to make sure she is taking care of her body.
My daughter and I are committed to building strong bones together.
