August: Osage County Opens December 25th #AugustMoments {$100 Giveaway}

This sponsored post was written by the Experimental Mommy.  All opinions remain 100% mine.

After the bread has been broken, the presents have been opened and the family has all gone home, we love to hit the movies for some extra family time.  If you like to do the same, consider checking out the new film, “August: Osage County,” that hits theaters this holiday season in select cities on Wednesday, December 25th (everywhere in January) and includes a star-studded cast such as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Ewan McGregor and many more!

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

This movie talks about togetherness and the importance of taking the time to be with your family and friends, especially around the Holidays.  You are sure to get wrapped up in the story of the Weston family so fortunately,  The Weinstein Co. has teamed up with MyHeritage.com for the release of August: Osage County to help you learn more about the Weston family and your own family with a free premium membership!

I have done a little bit of work on our own family tree and I find it quite fascinating!  I especially love looking at old pictures to get a glimpse of life in the past and I am trying to instill the same passion for learning in my own children.  In order to get started, I simply downloaded the printable family tree and taught the kids the very beginning of their own piece of history.

Have you started a family tree?  If so, what has been your experience?  Have you found out any interesting facts?  If not, download the family tree file above to get started!  You can also check out the Discover Your Roots Facebook app.  To help you begin your journey (and perhaps take the family to see August: Osage County, one Experimental Mommy reader will win a $100 VISA Gift Card!  Enter below:

  1. I haven’t, but one of my aunts worked on a tree a few years back and we found out that one of our ancestors may have come to America on the Mayflower, which we thought was pretty darn interesting.

  2. no i haven’t but it would be a great thing to do that, especially while my grandma is still alive, she knows and remembers so much.

  3. Yes my father’s line is traced to 1557.
We found out about two brothers my had that we didn’t know about.
    Thank you.

  4. I haven’t but my mom has, and we love looking at old pictures of great great great grandparents, etc!

  5. Yes! My husband’s 9x great grandfather put together the group that founded New York City! There’s a monument to him there and everything!

  6. I have done our family tree, back to the mid 1600’s. My great grandfather build the huge church organs.

  7. WE have, though my family is pretty boring and straight forward my daughter’s father found out that his grandfather was a twin and he never knew it (they had both passed)

  8. I have started one but haven’t got to far. I did find out my Great grandmother was an American indian.

  9. My brother seriously went into family tree research. He researched various families and went back centuries on some. Ironically he could not get far back on our grandparents. The Irish famine had a huge number of boats coming in to Canada though very few passenger lists are available. The information in Ireland and also in Norway was seldom kept for peasants

  10. Someone wrote a book several years ago and there are many interesting things. However, it all points to the fact that we come from many different places and cultures but we are who we make ourselves to be with the help of family and friends.

  11. i’ve been working on it for 10 years! we have a couple of brick walls. I would say a toss up between finding out I can trace back to 2 of the original pilgrims, and one of the founding families for montreal, were the most surprising

  12. I have not done a Family Tree! I cannot get my side of the families to agree on it!

    thank you

  17. We have! We had to do them for our kids in high school. We found so many great things. We found we weren’t at all originally from where we thought.

  18. Yes, I learned my family in Boston were The Breeds. The Battle of Bunker Hill was actually, in fact, fought on Breeds Hill.

  19. We have not done a full family tree but I did see the ship my great grandfather came over on from Sweden and learned that my grandfather was down on a census as being a girl because of his long hair when he was a little boy. lol

  20. I have done a family tree. The only interesting tidbit I found was that my great great grandmother go married at the age of 14. Wow!

  21. I haven’t done a family tree, but a cousin of mine did and uncovered a lot of interesting stuff- for instance, I have a great-great-grandfather who was a slave, the first Europeans in America on my mother’s side escaped an Indian massacre only to later marry Cherokee women and much, much more.

  22. We have not done one yet other than writing down what we know. I do know that my grandfather ‘s mom and dad came over from Norway and she was pregnant with him at the time!

  23. My brother has gotten into this with my mom’ side at least. Nothing really exciting but we found my sister’s first husband was related to the gangsta’ Jesse James and I just did one dna type search that said we are distantly related in my mom’s family to Jimmy Buffet. I had a great laugh! More so , we want to know medical information as we have been plagued by unfortunate and unexplainable health issues. With dna you can see what really lurks and is passed on. It’s fascinating. My great grandmother died young after having 3 children and spent the last years in a wheelchair. We had no idea he had remarrried and SHE was not our bio great grandma

  24. I haven’t actually done a family tree but I have some relatives who did a lot of research and made a couple books consisting of my dad’s side of the family’s history. It’s really interesting seeing that most of my relatives were engineers of some sort.

  25. I actually never have, but really want to so I can learn more about my heritage! We don’t have much family left as sadly, they most have passed on of cancer or other diseases.

Thank you for the chance to win! Happy Holidays! I haven’t stopped by your blog in a while! lol

  29. I tried doing one on Ancestry.com a while ago. I don’t have a very interesting family, it turns out! The most exciting thing anyone has done is built a famous church in Germany

  30. I did one on my dads side and was able to follow it all the way back to the 1600’s and 2 interesting things we had a relative in every war since the inception of the country and my dad always thought he was english but I followed his roots back to Germany

  35. No, I haven’t done a family tree. I have tried to find out information about relatives, though, and I haven’t been able to learn too much. It would be interesting to do if I had the time.

  36. Yes, I followed my mother’s side back a ways because we knew very little about my grandmother. I ended up finding very close relatives and am friends on facebook now.

  37. I have done our family tree at Ancestry.com, though it is still not complete. It was interesting when I uncovered a letter written by one of my Great Grandfathers about his voyage to America and the experience he and his fellow passengers went through. It was not an easy thing to endure! Merry Christmas, everyone!

  38. I started a family tree last year and now genealogy is one of my favorite hobbies! One interesting fact I learned is that my 3rd great grandfather helped start a bunch of Swedish Lutheran churches in 3 different states!

  43. I did research with my Grandmother and Dad and learned that we are related to John Hancock who signed The Declaration of Independence with his large and stylish signature!
