Join Me for a #FinishTheFight Twitter Party!

This is a sponsored conversation from The Motherhood written by Bridgette of Experimental Mommy.  All opinions remain 100% my own.

Earlier this month, I created my “Life List” to help the American Cancer Society #FinishtheFight.  As a science geek, I love that research is at the heart of the mission of the American Cancer Society which has been finding answers that save lives.  In fact, no single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the United States has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer.  For these reasons, I am proud to be co-hosting a Twitter Party and I would love for you to join in the fun!  Details are below:

LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE! Because silence won’t finish the fight, action will. In honor of the American Cancer Society’s 100th birthday (May 22), join us for a Moment AGAINST Silence, Wednesday, May 29, 2013, to make some noise and finish the fight against cancer.

What: From deadly to treatable, from curable to preventable, the progress the American Cancer Society has helped make in the past 100 years is remarkable. There was a time when the word “cancer” was spoken only in whispers – a time when we lost almost every patient. Yet today, 2 out of 3 survive to celebrate more birthdays. Let’s make it 3 out of 3.

Join us for a Twitter party in honor of the American Cancer Society’s 100th birthday to help finish the fight against cancer.  Help us make noise by taking a pledge and creating your life list on Facebook.

When: Wednesday, May 29, at 2p ET / 1p CT / 11a PT

Where: We’ll be on Twitter – follow the #FinishtheFight hashtag to track the conversation. You can see the details and RSVP via this Twtvite: http://twtvite.com/finishthefight

Hashtag: #FinishtheFight

Prizes: Five prizes will be awarded throughout the party to participants who respond correctly to trivia questions. Each winner will receive a $25 VISA gift card.

Hosts: @theMotherhood, @CooperMunroe, @EmilyMcKhann, @AmericanCancer

How to Create a “Hair Bow” in 3 Easy Steps

While my family and I were camping over Memorial Day weekend, the girls asked for me to try a few new and fun hairstyles for them to wear this Summer.  We found this adorable (and surprisingly easy hair style) while searching Pinterest on the blog of Hair and Make-up by Steph.  I tried it out on my oldest daughter and here are the results:

1.  Grab two sections of hair from the side of the head and secure them in the back with an elastic band.  The last time you wrap the elastic around the hair, do not pull the ends through.  This will create a loop that will become the bow.

2.  Separate the loop into two sections and secure each side with two bobby pins (one going up and one going down).

3.  Take a small section of the remainder of the pony tail, lift up and push through the center of the bow.  Pull down to tighten.  Secure with a bobby pin if necessary.

That’s it!  Enjoy!

Printable Dad Coupons for Father’s Day {Giveaway}

Since my daughters were born, my husband and I have made it a tradition to read them a bedtime story.  Not only does it foster a love of reading, but gives us some good quality snuggle time with each of them.  Every night, we let them choose the book and I will admit that I am tired of reading the same books over and over.  So, my husband and I are always on the lookout for new material.

Fortunately, I was sent the new children’s book, “Because I’m Your Dad” by Ahmet Zappa, son of the late Frank Zappa, for review.  My daughters could not wait to snuggle up with Dad and read the new story.  The artwork on the cover is whimsical and colorful so they couldn’t wait to dive in.

“Because I’m your dad, you can have spaghetti for breakfast, French toast for dinner, and rocky road ice cream in the bathtub.

In a text that’s both playful and loving, a father expresses his hopes and dreams for a one-of-a-kind relationship with his child. Whimsical monster characters bring the silly and sweet scenes to life and keep the book universal. The book’s ending, a moving tribute to the author’s father, guarantees intergenerational appeal.

Because I’m your dad, I will do all of these things for you and more . . .
because that’s what my dad did for me.”

The girls giggled their way through the book and ended with a big hug for Dad…success!  Check out the book trailer below for more details:

Because I’m Your Dad would make a great Father’s Day gift!  Attach these printable Dad coupons and you have a memorable gift guaranteed to make Dad smile!

This book will definitely become part of our nightly routine and I just love that the kids bring it to their Dad for extra quality time.  If you would like to give this book to a special guy for Father’s Day, enter my giveaway below.  One winner will receive a copy of Ahmet Zappa’s “Because I’m Your Dad” and kids play bongo drums!

Don’t Text and Drive #ItCanWait

What did we do before the age of smart phones?  As a professional blogger and social media addict, I will confess to being attached to my phone day and night.  However, when getting into the car, I am well aware of how distracting it can be to hear a text message arrive or emails flooding your inbox.  It is oh so tempting to pick up the phone for just a second to see what’s going on.

But in that second, your life can change.  You can change the lives of others.  All because of a simple text message causing an accident.  Is it worth it?  Did you know that those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a car crash?  Or that when drivers read or send a text message, their reaction time is doubled?

Verizon Wireless and AT&T are partnering to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. They are committed to working together to stop distracted driving. Now you can join the #ItCanWait movement by taking the pledge to never text and drive.

“No text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road. I pledge to never text and drive and will take action to educate others about the dangers of texting while driving.  No text is worth the risk.  It Can Wait.”

In addition to taking the pledge, you can read stories about texting and driving, learn interesting facts and take the texting and driving simulator to see where you stand.  I took the pledge, will you?

Palmolive Soft Touch is Easy on My Manicure {Giveaway}

This post is the opinion of The Experimental Mommy.  While a sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% mine.

Chores around the house are a necessary evil.  As much as I despise spending my weekends cleaning the house, I love the end result as a clean house seems to brighten my mood.  That being said, the chore that makes the biggest difference is the one I hate the most.

Dishes.

One of these days, someone will invent self-cleaning pots and pans (and when you do, contact me because I would love to be your spokesperson).  But until that day comes, I will have to grin and bear it.  If washing dishes is a chore I must do, I want a product to help me do it quickly and effectively.

I have been a long time fan of Palmolive as the brand has helped me clean dishes in my own home for over a decade.  So, I was thrilled to learn about the new Palmolive Soft Touch.  With the most gentle ingredients ever, Soft Touch is fortified with ingredients that will keep your hands in perfect condition for a manicure after finishing those pesky dishes.  The new line includes three colorful variants including Coconut Butter, Aloe and Vitamin E.  Over the next few months, I will be testing each Soft Touch variant and treating myself to a color-coordinated manicure.

First, I am trying the Palmolive Soft Touch Vitamin E.  Pink is my favorite color, so the bottle made me hate doing dishes a little bit less.  The scent is light and clean while the texture is buttery soft.  The dish washing liquid still created ample amount of suds and cleaned my dishes well.

After my kitchen was sparkling, I sat down to make my nails just as pretty!  My hands were indeed soft and not dry at all.  I am looking forward to trying the next variant of Palmolive Soft Touch soon!

Take the SUBWAY #smartNsaucy Challenge! {Giveaway}

With my husband and I trying to watch what we eat (hubby has lost nearly 60 pounds!), we have visited SUBWAY quite a bit ordering from their Fresh Fit menu.  Most recently, we tried the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich and had such a great experience, we couldn’t wait to try the new limited-time only addition to the Fresh Fit menu.  Fortunately, SUBWAY sent us a gift card to try the new offerings!

The Smokehouse BBQ Chicken Sandwich from SUBWAY is made with tender, slow-cooked pulled chicken smothered in an irresistible sweet and smoky BBQ sauce.  This sandwich is BIG on flavor, but surprisingly low-fat!  Put in on wheat bread and top with spinach, tomato and red onion for a delicious sandwich that won’t ruin your waistline.

We are fortunate enough to have a SUBWAY within walking distance of our home, so we tend to stop there often with our busy lifestyle.  Hubby could not wait to try the new sandwich while my girls stuck with the traditional turkey and cheese kids’ meals.  He was impressed with the sandwich (although he wished there was more chicken) and thought the sauce was a perfect blend of sweet and tangy.

What is your favorite SUBWAY sandwich?  Don’t miss any new offerings by following SUBWAY on Facebook and Twitter!  Are you ready to take the “Smart and Saucy” Challenge?  Enter to win a $25 SUBWAY gift card below!

Enjoying Huckleberry’s as Part of Restaurant.com’s #ReviewCrew

“Honey, let’s eat out for dinner tonight!” is a sentence that is music to my ears.  After a long day at work, I love trying out new restaurants with my family and in New Orleans, there is certainly no shortage of restaurants to test.  For this reason, I was thrilled to be chosen to be a part of the Restaurant.com Review Crew.

Restaurant.com enables local restaurants and small businesses to give diners the best deal on every meal. We help diners find and use local restaurants, driving new customers and bringing back old ones, providing great value to the diner, and strengthening local economies.

On Restaurant.com, you can purchase gift cards to participating restaurants for a discounted price making eating out much more affordable.  In addition, you can also purchase a Restaurant.com gift card to give as a present so your special someone can choose their own restaurant at which to dine.

As a Review Crew Member, we were given a Restaurant.com gift card which we chose to use to buy a gift card to a local restaurant, Huckleberry’s.  With two small children, it is important for a restaurant to be family-friendly, affordable and have a good kids’ menu.  We found all of that and more at Huckleberry’s.

At first glance, I liked the way the outside of the restaurant looked.  Parking was ample and the building looked well maintained.  Upon entering, I loved the hardwood floors and large windows.  My youngest immediately spotted the ship wheel an doodle pad play area which kept her entertained until dinner arrived.

Hubby and I decided to try the thin cut onion rings as an appetizer which were A-MAZING.  No kidding….best onion rings I have ever tried.  Lightly battered and seasoned well, it was pure perfection.

The menu offers traditional New Orleans fare with featuring seafood, po-boys and salads.  Hubby and I both went for fresh grilled chicken salads.  The chicken was delish and the salad was a nice size without being over-filling.  Even though the kids’ menu was nice, my daughter was intrigued by the cheese grits and gobbled them up!

The staff was incredibly friendly and talked directly to my daughter which she just loved.  Our food arrived quickly and hot and the waitress was very attentive.  Honestly, we enjoyed it and will definitely return in the future.

Thanks to Restaurant.com, my family and I got try a new gem right in our own neighborhood which will hopefully become a regular spot for family dinners.  Don’t miss any of my fellow Review Crew members reviews by following hashtag #ReviewCrew and Restaurant.com on Twitter!

Maddyloo’s Mini Heart Boxes Make Perfect Gifts!

With two young girls with thick heads of hair, our morning routine can get quite hectic.  After using detangler to comb through their hair, my girls start to contemplate their style of choice for the day.  Almost always, the younger will choose whatever her older sister decides upon so we have two of everything to eliminate arguments.

Hair accessories fill our bathroom cabinets but when my daughters find a style they like and works for their active lifestyle, they become obsessive!  We were recently sent some Maddyloo no-crease hair ties to try out and I can already tell they are hooked.

The Maddyloo no-crease hair ties are the cutest solution for pulling your hair back with enough elastic to keep a ponytail in place, but wide enough to not leave a dent. From camouflage and metallic to rhinestone and tie dyed, Maddyloo has found a way to marry function with beautiful eye (or wrist) candy.  Available in fourteen different color themes, each adorable heart-shaped box contains seven hair ties guaranteed to make your heart skip a beat.

My daughters were so excited when they received the heart shaped container full of glittery hair ties.  In fact, if asked their favorite color they will both say, “GLITTER!”  From pink to silver to black, they loved them all.  Lily’s hair is quite thick so we used two ties in her hair.  While it does secure her hair for daily activities it is not enough for dance class.  To solve the problem, we used a regular ponytail holder and added sparkle with the Maddyloo ties.

The Maddyloos Mini Heart Box is available for only $15 and would make perfect End of the School Year or Dance recital gifts!  Learn more about Maddyloo products by checking out their website or following them on Twitter and Facebook.
