Slow Down and Savor the Holidays with Marie Callender’s

In my experience, with the holidays comes fun, laughter, family, food and a major time crunch.  While I can be super organized in my professional life, my personal life tends to be hectic.  My two daughters keep me hopping especially this time of year as we run to dance performances, holiday parties and school concerts which leaves little time to think about preparation of the all important holiday meal.

Fortunately, we are headed to my brother’s home this Thanksgiving who has become quite the chef in the last few years.  On the other hand, I am less known for my cooking skills (if you can even call them skills) but I still need to prepare something to contribute to the dinner table this Thanksgiving.  Hmmm…what to bring?  Dessert!

My sweet tooth loves this time of year (even if my dentist does not).  When asked to bring something to a party, I almost always opt for something sugary.  However, at this time of year I have little time (or desire) to prepare something homemade.  Looking for an easy way out, I have turned to Marie Callender’s pies on several occasions (the chocolate cream pie is my favorite).  This year, I was asked to try the Dutch Apple Pie so I decided to try it out at home before making it for Thanksgiving.

I will admit that I am skeptical about frozen apple pie.  Can it possibly taste as delicious as homemade?  We purchased the frozen pie at our local grocery store and took it home to bake.  Simply unwrap, place on a cookie sheet and bake for 50 minutes at 400 degrees.  Almost immediately, the house smelled divine!

After baking, I crumbled the included cinnamon topping on top of the pie and continued baking for an additional 10 minutes until the topping became golden brown.  This is when the kids came running into the kitchen to see what I was baking! They didn’t leave until it was ready to eat.

When the pie was removed from the oven, it honestly did not look store bought.  I think I could totally pass it off as homemade.  Served warm, my daughters both enjoyed a piece of the Dutch Apple Pie.  The crust was flaky, the apples were tender and the cinnamon was abundant.  Delicious!

  1. I enjoy baking the cookies and breads that everyone (including myself) enjoy eating.
I go for a walk to see the lights of the houses.

  2. I let everyone bring their favorite dish so everyone is involved and I don’t have to do all the work. This gives me time to enjoy my family more and be in the kitchen less.

  3. I start cooking days ahead and enlist the teenagers to help. This year we are going low key so it’s just the five of us.

  4. Invite someone who won’t have a Thanksgiving meal meal to join you and your family. That will make your day as well as theirs.

  5. Can’t beat a perfect dutch apple pie. although i had mincemeat with real meat for the first time this T-giving.

  6. It is a tough choice with all the cream pies out there, but I think my favorite is Dutch Apple Pie with the awesome chrunchy sweet topping on it.

  7. My favorite pie is PECAN! I tried to make it once and it was a disaster, so I don’t have it many times a year…it’s always a treat! By the way, my pinterest ID is jyonkosk, just in case you needed it!
