What is Your Favorite Memory On Your Porch or Balcony?

New Orleans is a social city. People generally do not hide in their backyards for private parties but rather hold giant block parties in their front yards or spend the evenings on their front porches mingling with neighbors. Topics of conversation can range from favorite restaurant, latest festival or Saints football. New Orleanians love some Saints football.

In 2010, the Saints won their very first Superbowl (yes, we are still basking in the glory). This city went nuts…literally nuts. I am sure you could hear the screaming and celebrating in your own neck of the woods. I have honestly never seen such unity in this city except just after Hurricane Katrina threatened to tear us apart. We finally had something to celebrate! We were back!

For several nights before and after the Superbowl, people could be found talking football on their porches or holding parties for neighbors. Because we live on a very busy street and a block party is impossible, my family decided to join in the insanity in our own special way. Standing on our porch, my husband dressed up in his Saints football gear including an interesting hat and actual football pants. He waved hysterically at cars passing by and was rewarded with the sounds of cheers and honking. My girls donned their Saints cheerleader outfits complete with pom poms and shouted cheers at the top of their lungs. I honestly cannot remember a more fun time standing on our porch cheering on our boys in Black and Gold.
