Just Ducky Originals: Review and $25 Giveaway

A few weeks ago I introduced you to Just Ducky Originals, a fantastic clothing line to keep your kids looking adorable.  Fall shows have begun, and the best news is that Just Ducky now has a new online custom design page so you can preview your favorite outfits and how they will look with the different available fabrics.   This tool is GREAT for people like me who have trouble visualizing an outcome.   All of the fabrics are absolutely ADORABLE and you could spend days on end just oohing and ahhing over all the different combinations.   One of my favorites is the Vintage Rose Damask and Just Ducky was kind enough to send me a PRECIOUS outfit for Em using this fabric.

Emily loved her circle skort and matching tee with flower applique and monogram.  This outfit is perfect for a  fall birthday party or outing but casual enough to allow play with the built in shorts.  The snuggly-soft tee would also be perfect paired with some cute fall pants or even jeans for a more casual look.  It’s still hot here in South Louisiana but I am praying for cooler days so this outfit can be seen….it’s way too cute and sassy for the closet!

Becoming a Just Ducky consultant or hosting a home show has never been easier and there are tons of benefits as well.  Be sure to look into it and sign up for a catalog too so that you can see everything Just Ducky has to offer.

Reader Demographic Survey: Please Take!

After attending Blogher 2011 last week, I learned that I really should know my readers in order to provide you with the content you crave! So, please take this short survey and I will love you forever! As always, your information will never be sold or shared.

If you would like to create a similar survey for your site, check out the online form builder to create forms to survey your readers.  It was incredibly easy and I will even be able to analyze the data I collect (yes, I am a complete nerd).  I have never loved web forms so much!

BlogHer 2011: San Diego

BlogHer, one of the largest blogging conferences, will always hold a special place in my heart.  After all, it is where I met Cecelia who became my business partner in 2009.  As a newbie at BlogHer ’09, I had no idea what to expect.  In 2010, I packed my schedule with appointments and had little time to really connect with other bloggers or have a little fun.  In 2011, I think I finally figured it out!  Incorporating a mixture of appointments with brands, conversation with bloggers, and time to learn in a session or two, I left BlogHer 2011 feeling incredibly inspired.  So, I thought I would share some of my highlights of BlogHer 2011:

The first day, I attended the P&G Life Well Lived where I had a chance to connect with some of my favorite brands including Tide, Downey and Braun.  It was here that I heard a quote that will stick with me for a long time, “The days may be long, but the years are short.“  So true.  As a working Mom of two small girls, I am exhausted by the end of the day, so in times of frustration, I will remind myself of this quote.

During the conference, I was so happy to see a session focused on review blogging!  I was so proud of fellow bloggers (Niri, Amy and Stacie) as they spoke on a panel that helped to give legitimacy to our genre. After the session, I headed to the Expo Hall where I was able to connect with brands such as Dole (have you seen the new Shakers?), Dove Chocolate, Chuck E. Cheese, Playskool, King’s Hawaiian (huge fan of their bread) and Eggland’s Best.  Later in the conference, I got the opportunity to connect with brands such as Lovable Labels, Microsoft, Tide and McDonald’s during intimate lunch or dinner settings.  I absolutely loved hearing about the upcoming initiatives of these companies and can’t wait to share them with you!

However, I think the best part of BlogHer 2011 was the opportunity to be inspired by some of my favorite bloggers, connect with old friends and make new friends along the way!  For this alone, BlogHer 2011 was totally worth it!

Did you attend BlogHer 2011?  What was your favorite moment?

Easy Back to School Banana Breakfast Bread Recipe

We start school in about a week.  (cue sad music)  It’s time to start thinking school supplies, uniforms, freshly sharpened pencils…..and mass morning chaos.  I have to have the kids out the door no later than 7:10 am (cue even sadder music) and so breakfast is always something I need to have ready in a hurry so they can grab it and run.  A great alternative to super-sugary toaster pastries?  Banana Breakfast Bread.  It takes minutes to prepare (an hour to bake so do it the night before), stores easily, and the kids love it.  Let me know if you try it!  Or, if you have any healthy and quick breakfast ideas that your kids love, please share!

My kids like it warmed up in the microwave with a little butter....of course!

Banana Breakfast Bread

3 medium ripe bananas, mashed

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 eggs

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Here’s how to make it: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray.  In a large  bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.  Then add the other ingredients and mix until blended….don’t overmix!  Pour into pan and bake about an hour or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Enjoy!

Stay Sharp with Mentor Interactive Games

Do you ever stop and think to yourself how it’s grossly unfair that the toys our kids get to play with are SO much cooler than the toys we had?  As a 30-something year old, I tell my kids back in the “olden days’ there were no cell phones,  laptops, MP3 players, and “video games” meant you were looking at something like this:

Exciting, isn't it?

Luckily, our kids have lots more options.  We have a Wii and both kids have Nintendo DS systems, which they love for car trips and long waits in the doctor’s office.  This summer, I didn’t want them wasting brain cells, so I was excited to learn about the line-up of great games from ThinkSMART!

From the website: “Our award-winning educational video games are the perfect way to supplement your child’s education outside of the classroom. Kids love ThinkSMART Games because they’re fun to play, engaging and interactive—and you’ll love them because you’ll know that your child is reinforcing important creative thinking, reading, and problem-solving skills.”

ThinkSMART sent me a variety of games for my kids to test out.  My son loved the Crime-Solving of Scotland Yard and my daughter enjoyed treasure-hunting playing Labyrinth.  I introduced the games right before a car trip and they were excited to give them a “test drive.”  Both kids reported that the games were “cool” and I can report that they both stayed engaged for quite a while before I heard, “Are we there yet?“  Best of all, I was happy knowing they were actually having to think while playing.  ThinkSMART has some great options for Wii too, including ThinkSMART Wii Family, and Crazy Machines, which we all loved!    ThinkSMART games are widely available at most game retailers and would make a great gift for a kid (or adult) who loves to play!

Back to School Time….ALREADY? {Carolina Pad Coupon}

Ok, I need to show y’all something…..but NO JUDGEMENT.  Here we go……..

For the record, those notebooks were neatly stacked....and then I took a sharp turn. Oopsie.

Yeah, that’s the back of my car…loaded up with school supplies.  No, I’m not secretly Michelle Duggar and buying for 19 of my own children.  I’m a teacher. The way my school works is that the teachers purchase the supplies for all 20-something students and then we get reimbursed for it.  We like this method because we get what we like and I like all the kids to be “matchy-matchy,” meaning, everyone has a red folder, a certain brand of beloved Crayons (cause those other ones are garbage) and that helps to keep me calm.  So, because we start school in early August (waaaahhh!) I make the trek to the local discount store as soon as the July 4th decorations are down because that means the school supplies are out…..staring me down with the evil eye and reminding me the days of sleeping in are numbered.

I also let my kids come with me to pick up any of their necessary school supplies, which isn’t much because they attend school where I teach, so their teachers are running around like me with 90 speckled notebooks in their shopping carts getting weird looks from other shoppers.  But, each of them can still choose a special pack of pencils or “cool” pencil pouch to express a little bit of independence.   If you do the same, the kind people at Carolina Pad Store are offering our readers a 25% discount on your entire online order through September 15, 2011 (valid for United States shipping address only)!  Simply enter code notsoblogBTS_2011 at check out!

With my own two kids, ages 9 and 6, this means reality is setting in.  They’ve been living the high life of staying up late, sleeping way past 9:00 am, and pretty much doing whatever we feel like doing, when we feel like doing it.  As a result, I start getting panicky about getting them back into a routine.  My solution this summer has worked well so far.  I saved all the necessary appointments until the end of the summer and scheduled them early in the day.  So, last week we woke up early for a dentist appointment.  The next day? Eye doctor.  Sure, it’s no fun, but it has helped us get used to the routine of setting the dreaded alarm again and how to manage time efficiently in the morning to get fed, dressed, and out the door on time.  Because I am home for the summer, the kids typically don’t do a lot of camps, but this summer I purposefully signed my son ( the household night owl) up for soccer camp this week so he would be up early, active all day, and good and tired for a “normal” bedtime.  The trick once camp is over will be sticking to the newly re-set schedule.  I’m crossing my fingers it works!

What’s your secret?  When it’s time to start back, how do you get back on track? The days are numbered!  Good luck with your Back to School routines!

Get Creative with Constructive Playthings {Giveaway}

Is it really August?  Where has the Summer gone?  Looking back on the past two months, we have been insanely active!  Two vacations, a few week long camps for girls, many family parties and several backyard barbeques have kept us quite busy.  So, as the Summer winds down, I am looking for less physical and more creative activities for the kids.

As a Constructive Mom, I get the honor of trying out some of the toys with my girls.  This month, I decided to try both the Smart Lab Fashion Studio and Illustory Make a Book Kit.  I knew both toys would bring out the creative side of my girls, and best of all….we could play them together….in the air conditioning!

The Smart Lab Fashion Studio was perfect for my 6 year old fashionista!  The 9″ light table, acetate paper, colored pencils and clothes to trace allowed her to create her very own designer fashion line.  She had a blast creating formal outfits, swimwear and even some silly combinations.  At just $19.99, this toy would make a great gift for one of her first grade friends.

Illustory Make a Book Kit was another creative outlet that even let my six year old practice her spelling and handwriting.  As a beginning reader, we have been working with her over the summer to keep her skills sharp and this project was a great culmination.  The kit comes with ten markers, heavy paper and detailed instructions on how your child can become an author and an illustrator of their very own book.  It helps your child plan our the setting, characters and plot of their story.  My daughter first created the cover of her book and decided to title it, “Silly.”  The book she created was funny and she wrote the entire plot all by herself.  In the next few days, we will mail the papers in the postage paid envelope and receive our professionally bound book in just 4 weeks.  This would make a great holiday gift for a Grandparent to proudly display on their coffee table!

My daughter loved both toys from Constructive Playthings! My youngest (age 3) was a bit too young for the kits, but with the help of her older sister, was able to join in some of the fun.
