Klutz Guide to the Galaxy: Review and Giveaway

As a teacher, I am a huge advocate of reading.  My little one has recently become a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and I love it.  Today’s tidbit while on our way to a birthday party was, “Mom, did you know an adult cat has 30 teeth?”  Anyway, I love books that teach interesting facts to kids in plain and simple language that they can understand.  The Klutz Guide to the Galaxy does just that!

I have often counted on Klutz products for birthday party gifts as their products are unique, budget friendly, and spark creativity.  The new Guide to the Galaxy would make a great gift for any budding astronomer you know.  With 6 must-have tools for the backyard, it gets kids DOING science instead of just reading about it.   My kids loved the spiral bound pages so that they could easily lay the book flat to get the specific information they needed.  My son’s favorite tool is the Build-it-yourself  Telescope.  With it, he was able to see the moon and identify some of its landmarks one clear night!  He has an “official” telescope too, and reading more in the Klutz Guide to the Galaxy sparked him to get it out and use it a few other following nights.   The Guide to the Galaxy can help answer simple questions like,  “Where’s the Big Dipper?”  to the unthinkable like, “How likely is it that a meteor will fall from the sky and squash me flat?” and “If I lived on Mercury, am I already old enough to drive?”

Let’s Go For a Ride!

strollerNow that winter is over (in most places) and Spring has sprung, are you getting outdoors more often?  My two daughters love to go on walks around the neighborhood or the local park.  While most of our outings these days consist of them riding in the two person wagon, it wasn’t long ago that we were hauling out the pushchair (or stroller) so they could enjoy a longer ride.

Fortunately for us, there is a local park within walking distance to our home, so we would put my first daughter in our jogging stroller and head for some mommy exercise.  However, when my second daughter came along and my first was none to happy about riding in a “baby stroller”, we found a sit and stand stroller or a tandem pushchair worked best for us.  My oldest had a bit of freedom while riding in the sit and stand stroller, but also loved sitting behind her sister (and closer to me) in the tandem.

My cousin, who is now writing here at Experimental Mommy, just had her second child and is in much of the same predicament as I was several years ago.  She is currently shopping for a new stroller and considered the tandem pushchairs as well.  The Safety 1st Duodeal Tandem buggy is an awesome option!  But, because her son is getting older as well, and a Disney vacation is just over the horizon, she is looking into the sit and stand as well.

If you have two small children, what type of stroller do you have at home?  What are the advantages and disadvantages!  Help!

Get the New Burger King “Tender 8!” {Giveaway}

With a busy lifestyle, we do have the occasional meal on the run.  However, we do not have an unlimited budget, so finding quality food for a decent price can sometimes be a challenge.  Like just about all kids, my daughters are huge fans of chicken nuggets.  Recently, Burger King has unveiled their all new “Tender 8″ chicken nuggets!

To celebrate, Burger King launched their “Tender 8″ Facebook application so new fans of the chicken nugget could help spread the word while enjoying an awesome coupon.  Visit the app and select your “Tender 8″ from your family and friends.  Each of those you select (plus you, of course) will receive a printable coupon for a FREE 8 piece box of Burger King Chicken Tenders when you buy an 8 piece box.

A good friend of mine, Sara from Momma Findings, gave me the chance to try the new Burger King item by selecting me to be a member of her “Tender 8″ crew (thanks, Sara!).  Tonight for dinner, I decided to give them a try.  I have had the old crown shaped tender from Burger King in the past, so I was curious to see the difference.  The new tenders appear larger than the old nuggets and were tasty.  The menu item comes in four, eight or twenty pieces to satisfy just about any appetite.

GIVEAWAY

Want to try the new Tender 8 at Burger King?  Five winners will each receive a $10 Burger King Gift Card!

How to enter:

1. Tell me one person you would include in your Tender 8!

Seneca Farms Oatmeal and Fruit: Review and Coupon

With being a teacher,  a husband that has early morning hours, and two kids to get to school, breakfast can be a mad rush Monday through Friday.  My visions of being June Cleaver in the kitchen whipping up Belgian waffles for my children before school never came to reality.  Breakfast around here is grab and get to the table……fast.  When I was offered the chance to review a new breakfast product,  Seneca Farms Oatmeal and Fruit, I was excited to see if it was something we can add to the breakfast rotation!

I received samples of both the Apple Cinnamon and Vanilla Peach oatmeal.  Both come in a convenient container that is ready to go, so there isn’t any prep involved other than to vent the plastic lid and zap in the microwave for less than a minute!   My guinea pig for this breakfast experiment was my son, who loves oatmeal and Seneca Farms was no exception!  He ate his quickly and without complaint and I felt good knowing that he got something warm and nourishing…better than cold cereal by far!  He ate breakfast at 7:00 am and said that he wasn’t starving as usual before his 11:30 lunch period at school. Success!  We will definitely be keeping Seneca Farms Oatmeal and Fruit in our pantry from now on!

Did you know that nearly 60% of U.S. parents of children ages 3-17 admit that their child skips breakfast, with more than half of U.S. Moms wishing their child ate a more nutritious breakfast?  Additionally, 46% of Moms who skip breakfast say they do so because they do not have enough time to prepare or eat it. (*Results of 2011 Children’s Nutrition Survey, conducted by Harris Interactive for Seneca Farms)   Those are some scary statistics.  Although one of my children is difficult to coax into eating in the morning, I always have something available to her.  Now, being short on time can’t be an excuse to not offer her something nutritious and satisfying!

Seneca Farms Products are available at Walmart and many other retailers.  If you would like a coupon to try Seneca Farms, click on the image above or visit their Facebook page! Hooray!  Who needs those Belgian Waffles when you can have Seneca Farms Oatmeal and Fruit?

Cooking with Coke: T-Fal Giveaway

After college, I entered Graduate School to pursue a Master’s Degree in Biology.  To what do I credit my success?  My determination? Nope. My study skills?  Nope.  My parents?  Well, maybe a little.  In all honesty, Coke helped me more than anything! I can’t even begin to count how many days were started with an ice cold can of Coke and ended with an equally yummy glass of Coke.  It kept me going through long nights of study groups, weekend research sessions and the dreaded exam day.

Coke is a staple here in the South.  In fact, we generally refer to any soda as “Coke.”  But did you know that you could cook with it, too?!?  In order to get families excited about coming together at the table, Coca-Cola recently launched the “Cooking With Coke” website as a place for fans to share recipes, stories and mealtime traditions.  Take a minute to browse through the recipes or upload one of your very own to share (Coke doesn’t even need to be an ingredient in order for you to share with the online community).  After looking through the site, I found some recipes I would love to try in my kitchen including the lemon and garlic hummus and the Easy Coca Cola BBQ (perfect for 4th of July!). If you find a bunch of recipes that you love, you can even compile and print your own custom cookbook or let two famous chefs inspire you to bring your family together and create lasting mealtime memories.

GIVEAWAY

In order to help you get cooking with Coke, one reader will receive an Ingrid Hoffmann 12qt Tamale Pot and Steamer with Lid by T-fal®” (value: $59.00)!  Ingrid is one of the chef’s featured on Cooking with Coke!

Aloha from Old London: Review

With Summer right around the corner and my blogging conference being held at an indoor waterpark in just a few weeks, I am trying like crazy to loose a few pounds before slipping into a swimsuit.  Unfortunately, my passion for french fries threatens to derail my efforts.  But honestly, what I love about those french fries is the crunch and the salt so I just need to find another way to satisfy the craving.

Enter Old London Snacks.  Recently, I was sent two boxes of snacks, the Melba Toast Sea Salt and the Bagel Chips in Spicy Cheddar.  I had actually never reached for these in the grocery store mainly because I had no idea what to eat with them or if they could stand on their own.  After checking out the Old London recipes available online, I found that the snacks were actually quite versatile (did you know you could make Lasagna with them?).

I tried the Melba Toast Sea Salt snacks first.  I liked the crunch, but the flavor was nothing to write home about.  However, I spread some Skinny Cow Garlic and Herb cheese on them and was in heaven! YUM!  This made a great satisfying snack for little calories.  Next, I was up for some Spicy Cheddar.  At first, I thought, “For a New Orleanian, these sure aren’t very spicy.” But as soon as I bit into my second Bagel Chip, the spice kicked in!  These chips can certainly stand on their own and do not require a dip of any kind to create a tasty and satisfying snack.

While you are trying all of the Old London varieties, make sure you head over to their Facebook page and enter the Aloha Old London Sweepstakes through June 30, 2011.  From the website:

“Old London will send one lucky winner and a guest on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to the energizing island of Oahu in the Hawaiian islands. While soaking up the beautiful Hawaiian sunshine, experience everything this tropical paradise has to offer with dinner for two at Tropics Bar & Grill at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, one Hawaiian Lomilomi Massage at Mandara Spa at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, a private cooking lesson at the award-winning Chef Mavro restaurant, two Alii Luau packages at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and surfing lessons at world famous Waikiki Beach. The four-day, three-night, all-expenses-paid experience also includes air travel and accom-modations at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa in Waikiki.”

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Old London and received product samples and a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

With Springtime comes many occasions to wear our Sunday’s best!  Between Easter, a Baptism, and two Graduations, both of my daughters will need a few nice dresses which can get quite expensive!  Recently, I was introduced to Nancy August, a childrens wear website carrying some beautiful gowns at great prices!  About Nancy August:

“We love flower girl dresses. That is why our mission is to provide our customers with quality flower girl dresses at the most affordable prices. Nancy August offers hundreds of in stock flower girl dresses, fancy baby dresses, ballerina dresses, princess dresses, first communion dresses, christening dresses, holiday dresses and so much more! After browsing the website with my oldest daughter, she decided that she wanted to try the Sophisticated Flapper Flower Girl Dress in Pink.  This fully lined bright pink layered gown is made from crinoline which shimmers a ton in the sunlight!  The width is adjustable due to the sash which ties in the back and the length comes to the knee.  Following the sizing chart, the dress ran true to size and it fit my daughter perfectly when it arrived.

Lily absolutely loved her gown and wore it to Church on Easter Sunday.  We paired it with white sandals, but we could easily dress it up a bit more with fancier shoes.  The original price of this dress was $139.99, but it sells at NancyAugust.com for only $41.99!  What an incredible deal!  In addition, if you order more than $75, your order ships free.

If your little girl loves all things sparkley, you have to check out Nancy August for your next dressy occasion.  No girls?  No problem!  Nancy August has dress up clothes for your boys, too!

Green Your Education

Last week, I told you about the initiative and goals of Global Green and Pureology.  This week, I have been learning more about the program and what it takes to “green” a school.  Did you know that 20% of Americans spend their day in a school?  Many schools in our Country are old, waste energy, and are made of toxic materials causing both teachers and students to miss school due to illness.  But Global Green is working to create schools that use more natural light, less water and less energy!  In fact, Global Green is currently working on seven schools in the New Orleans area.

Knowing that Global Green is investing our local schools made me even more interested in the program and how I can help beyond nominating my own school for a green makeover.  The upcoming Earth Day is a great way to open a conversation with your children about doing their part to save the environment and making their school a better place to learn.  In a brainstorming session with my daughter, she decided that she would rather take an eco-friendly container to school for her drink rather than bringing a new plastic water bottle each day.  She also decided that she would color on both sides of the paper instead of reaching for a new sheet for every picture.   At only six years old, I was proud of the sacrifices she was willing to make for the Planet!

If your school could use a Green Makeover, make sure you enter the Global Green/Pureology contest soon!
