Similac StrongMoms Baby Journal iPhone App: Review

baby In 2005, I became a Mother for the first time.  Because Motherhood was so new to me, I was meticulous about recording my baby’s every move including feedings, diaper changes and naps.  I carried a journal in my diaper bag so I would not miss a thing even when we were on the go.  A little neurotic?  Maybe. But for my scientific brain, the input and output of my baby was like data that must be recorded!

Recently, Similac released an iPhone app that would have made life so much easier!  This free app allows you to make note of feeding (both bottle and breast), diaper changes, nap times and growth measurements.  The app even creates trend charts so you can easily identify developing patterns allowing you to predict your baby’s needs.

The hardest thing for me to remember when I was nursing was with which breast I had started.  Fortunately for new breastfeeding Moms, the app allows you to track which side you began with and how long the baby fed.  I know my daughter preferred the right side, so I did work hard to get her to take the left as well.  You can record how long the baby goes between feedings and detailed descriptions of what comes out.  Trust me, I never thought I would dissect what comes out of my baby, but if the doctor wants to know, you need the info at your fingertips!

I think the best part of the app is that your findings can be emailed directly to your pediatrician or family.  I know in the beginning, I was concerned that my baby wasn’t eating enough and this app would have been a great way to communicate my findings to our pediatrician.  Pulling out an iPhone would have been so much easier than fumbling with a bulky journal.  What a peace of mind!

Keeping organized made me feel like I had some control over the new little one in my home (however false that may have been), but admittedly, it was hard when you were sleep deprived.  I can’t imagine keeping track of more than one baby at a time!  Two of my friends had sets of twins, so I can only imagine how helpful the Similac StrongMoms Baby Journal would have been to them.  You can track more than one baby at a time and even upload a picture to keep the records straight!

Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, new Mom or Mom of five, the Similac StrongMoms Baby Journal can help you stay organized so you don’t miss a thing!  Did I mention it’s FREE?

This review is the opinion of the Experimental Mommy.  Others may have a differing opinion of the product.  The Similac iPhone app is free for all, however I was compensated for my time from Collective Bias.  All opinions remain 100% mine.

Keep Warm with Snoozies: Review and Giveaway

We have laminate floors throughout the main part of our home.  While I love them, our home is also raised which makes for some chilly feet during the winter months.  My husband has bought me a million pairs of slippers, but truth be told…I can’t stand to wear slippers.  I have always been a sock girl, but with the laminate flooring, sock feet can be hazardous.

Snoozies

Recently, I was introduced to Snoozies, the cozy little foot covering!  I couldn’t wait to try out a pair and see if they were the solution to my cold feet problem.  Snoozies claims that they are the “cure for cold feet” so it definitely sounded promising.  A few details from their website:

Not a sock or a slipper – snoozies!® combine the best of both!

  • Easy to clean – Completely machine-washable
  • Durable – Stands up to repeated washings and still looks great
  • Comfortable – Soft Sherpa fleece on the inside for a snug, cozy fit
  • Stylish – Brushed fleece exterior comes in fun-to-wear colors and patterns
  • Safe – Non-skid sole means no slipping on wood floors and tile
  • Affordable – MSRP $12
  • Available in adult and kid’s sizes

I received a pair of Snoozies in a size 7 (I normally wear a 6.5 street shoe).  They were a little loose on me probably because I have narrow feet.  However, I washed and dried them and they did fit a bit better.  They are easy to slip on and off just like a sock, but have a cozy fleece lining just like slipper.  I loved the way the fleece felt and I loved that they were not bulky like a traditional slipper.  The Snoozie also had a non-skid lining which makes them easy to chase after my two kids, even on the laminate flooring!

If you are looking for the cure for cold feet and don’t like the weight or bulkiness of slippers, try Snoozies!  There are so many different fun and traditional patterns that you are sure to find something you love.  Need a birthday gift?  At only $12, you should check out the birthday patterns, too!

Kidorable Ballerina Collection: Review and Giveaway

Last year, we decided to take this kids to their very first New Orleans Jazz Fest!  If you’ve never been (what are you waiting for?!?), the festival takes place at the Fairgrounds and brings together some amazing music and food promising a fun time for all.  However, it POURED the day before the festival and turns the fairgrounds into a huge mud pit.  Before heading to the Fest, we stopped to get the girls some rain boots in order to make navigating the grounds a little easier (and a lot less messy!).  The only boots we could find were U-G-L-Y and my two princesses were not happy.  So, when I saw the new Ballerina Collection from Kidorable, I knew the rain boots were a must have for the upcoming 2011 Jazz Fest!  About Kidorable:

In 1997, Kidorable sprung from the minds, hearts and efficiency apartment of Liping and Jonathan Domsky. They proclaimed, “The world needs someone to create children’s apparel and accessories that are both functional and fun. We can do that.”  And so Kidorable was conceived. Starting with lions and cats and bears, oh my, manifested as umbrellas and hangers, Kidorable generated enough sales during its first year to break even and plant fruitful Kidorable seeds throughout the land. The following year sales grew ten fold. Every year since, give or take, a new style and/or product line debuted. And every year, the world joyfully embraced more Kidorable delights, give or take, than the year before.”

kids rain boots

After taking a look at the offerings by Kidorable, I wasn’t sure what I loved more!  The Ballerina Boots are precious, but the Rain Coat is so unique!  When the boots arrived, my daughter squealed and immediately threw off her shoes in order to try them on.  The boots come in kids sizes 5-13 and young adult sizes 1 and 2 and fit true to size.  My daughter typically wears a size 7 and they fit her perfectly.  I don’t think she even realized they were rain boots because she promptly danced around the living room as if she had on the softest ballet slippers!  In fact, she asked to keep them on while she took her nap, but thankfully I convinced her otherwise.

Are your boys not a fan of ballet?  Don’t worry, Kidorable has a new Space Hero line just for the little guys!  Complete with a rain coat, boots, umbrella, backpack and hangers, you can’t go wrong with any of these items for the space explorer in your home! And if you have a little Diva, you have to check out the Houndstooth Rain Coat inspired by Madonna’s Best Selling Children’s Book, The English Roses.

In 2005, my home succumbed to the wrath of Hurricane Katrina taking in some water.  Fortunately, we had flood insurance and were able to repair most of the damage.  I few things were not covered and we had to decide how to prioritize the repairs.  Kitchen and bathroom cabinets were a necessity, but counter tops and faucets were not.  With fresh new cabinets in place, the old faucets stuck out like a sore thumb.  So, I was thrilled when Price Pfister asked us to review two of their faucets.

faucet

Our old faucet

For the kitchen, we chose the 2 hole Hanover Pull-Down faucet in stainless steel.  I have not previously owned a pull down faucet, but have heard that they are great for sinks that are not very deep.  The pull down feature allows me to place a pot on the counter top and fill it easily.  The anti-splash feature with spray volume control is wonderful as well.  With my old faucet, the hose was either on or off with no in between!  The Hanover also comes with a soap dispenser which I love.  This looks so much cleaner than a bottle of hand soap on the sink!

New and Improved Faucet

For the bathroom, my husband and I chose the Ashfield single control faucet in brushed nickel.  The style of our bathroom leans to country, so this “pump-like” faucet fits right in.  I can’t tell you how much I love this faucet.  The style really finishes the bathroom and makes it look much better.

faucet

The Ashfield

My husband took on the task of installing both faucets.  I figured it would take the greater part of a day and would probably include a fair amount of frustration.  However, I am happy to report that the faucets were BOTH installed in just over an hour with absolutely no confusion or irritation!  He did a beautiful job and actually had a few adorable helpers!

working with Dad

My Mom, who is a Realtor, always says that you should invest in upgrading your kitchen and bathroom to get a great return.  I feel that the Price Pfister faucets give our rooms a step up and will definitely catch the eye of any buyer should we decide to sell in the future.

summary

The Price Pfister faucets are a welcome addition to both our bathroom and kitchen.  They are both beautiful and functional and were very easy to install.  I would definitely seek out this brand in the future!

Buy It: Price Pfister faucets can be found at Home Depot, Lowe’s and Amazon.com.  Prices vary by model number.

VERIPUR Hand Sanitizer Moisturizer: Review

New Orleans is know for quite a few things:  music, Mardi Gras, and incredible food to name a few.  But, we are also known for our heat and humidity which makes this winter almost unbearable for me and my skin.  The cold temperatures and dry weather has wreaked havoc on my hands depriving them of all moisture.  Add to this the fact that I am using hand sanitizer to avoid the cold and flu season, and you have some pretty messed up hands!

My skin is crying for help, so I was anxious to try Veripur, the hand sanitizer and moisturizer in one.  Available exclusively at Walgreens, VERIPUR™ is a non-drying, alcohol-free hand sanitizer that kills 99.9% of germs on contact and continues to protect your hands for up to four hours after application. Plus, moisturizing vitamin E, avocado, jojoba, grape seed oils and natural extracts prevent the dryness often associated with alcohol-based hand sanitizers.”

I have been using Veripur for about a week now.  The tube is small enough to fit in my purse so it is available wherever I go.  Because Veripur is alcohol free, I love that you don’t get an overwhelming smell when applied.  In fact, you can get it completely unscented or in a lightly fresh scent.  The moisturizers have definitely improved the condition of my hands and I love that my skin is protected against germs well after application.  I will definitely grab for the Veripur over my regular hand sanitizer especially during these brutal winter months!

Want to try it for yourself?  Head to your local Walgreens and pick up a 3 fl. oz tube for the suggested retail price of $5.99 or in a 13 fl. oz pump bottle for $10.99!

The Newly Redesigned Man’s Polo from Lands’ End: Review and Giveaway

My loving hubby is many things…..thoughtful, honest, funny, and handsome to name a few.  But, one word that would NOT describe him is clotheshorse.  I have tried for years to impress upon him the value of well made clothing and while I have made strides, I don’t think he fully believes me…..yet.  So, I was thrilled to be able to let him review the newly reinvented Man’s Polo from Land’s End.

I have long known the quality of Lands’ End clothing having ordered outfits and swimsuits for my daughters and myself.  I have been able to pass down clothes from my oldest daughter to my youngest because of the superior construction and durability.  My husband received the Man’s Polo in Red just in time for the Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance and my daughter’s school this weekend.

The Loves of my Life.

Some of the new features of the new design can be seen in the following video and include:

  • Jersey-taped seams on the neck and shoulders add comfort
  • Fabric that is heftier and softer than ever before
  • No-curl collar that lies flat wash after wash

So did my hubby love it?  For starters, he wasn’t thrilled with the color, but it was perfect for the dance.  He did like several of the other colors available including the dark cobalt blue.  However, he really did like the design and overall quality of the shirt.  He commented that “for a polo shirt, it wasn’t itchy at all” and “the design did not pull at my shoulders which made it much more comfortable to wear.”

I think he may be a convert!  I have a feeling he will be buying more of the Lands’ End Polo shirts in the future!

Life Happens. Arm yourself with Ace!

My name is Jennifer, and I am a klutz.  My dad used to say I couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time.  Sounds harsh, but the truth hurts.  I am constantly banging into stuff, cutting myself in the kitchen, and having catastrophes of some sort.  It’s who I am.  Sigh.

When I was asked recently to review a variety of Ace products, I agreed, knowing that I would likely need one of them in the near future.  Bad gris-gris, I guess.  About 2 weeks ago while on a camping trip with our kids and some friends, I ran away from a lizard like a lunatic.  I tripped, fell smack onto the concrete, and tore the skin off both palms.  Lovely. Luckily, I had taken the arsenal of Ace products along with us!  Ace kindly sent me a cold compress, sports tape, self-adhering bandages, and an elbow brace.   After I finished laughing at myself for going splat on the concrete, I was able to clean myself up a bit.  We all know that band-aids won’t stick to the palm of your hands.  However, with the Ace self-adhering bandages I was able to bandage my wounded palms up and didn’t have to worry about the elements from our camping trip getting into my boo-boos!

Having kids means having cuts and scrapes, and having a kid that plays sports like mine does means bumps and bruises along the way.  Ace cold compresses are just the thing to toss into your soccer or baseball bag.  Compact and light, they don’t require refrigeration and are perfect for instant relief at the ball park in the event of an injury.   Ace has a huge variety of products to suit your every need and even offer injury care instructions for those who need a tutorial on how to best care for their mishap!  Ace products are widely available in stores nationwide.  So, when life happens, have Ace on hand!

This review is the opinion of Jennifer of the Experimental Mommy.  Others may have a differing opinion of the product.  While a product sample was received to facilitate this review, all opinions remain 100% honest.

Create an Award Winning Science Project with Elmer’s and Scientific Explorer!

You can probably tell my the title of my blog that I am a science geek.  I have always been into science and often asked for microscopes and slides for birthdays or holidays.  When it came time to choose a career, I knew I wanted a white coat, but didn’t want to be a doctor.  After taking a few courses in college, microbiology won my heart.

As a professional, I love inspiring little ones with science!  I have visited my high school to give talks on career day, reached out to elementary schools and even judged a few science fairs.  I am always impressed with what the kids put together and how much effort they put into their projects.  However, sometimes their passion and hard work doesn’t come through in the presentation.

As a judge, I make a point to read each project entered into the fair.  Posters that are easy on the eye allow the real science to shine through.  Your science fair project presentation does NOT have to cost a fortune, but should be neat, clear and support the work you did.  Flashing lights, writing in ten different colors or covering your poster in glitter can certainly be pretty, but will make the judges job much harder.

If you are looking for some great ideas and materials to use for your science fair presentation, check out Scientific Explorer and Elmer’s.  This year, these two companies have partnered to show kids just how easy and fun science, and science fair presentations, should be.  To demonstrate, my daughters and I were sent the Ultimate Crystal Growing Kit from Scientific Explorer! While my daughters are too young to enter a project in a Science Fair, it is never too young to encourage a love of knowledge. The kit contains materials for making a ton of different types of crystals, but my kids wanted to try the sapphire ones.  The directions were easy to follow and within a matter of a few hours, we had beautiful blue crystals!

Send us your video entry – simply post a response video to one of ours!
