First Impressions Baby Apparel: Review and Giveaway

This coming weekend, we are throwing a baby shower in honor of my sister-in-law (don’t worry, it’s not a surprise!).  Looking through her registry, there are so many cute items for my soon to be niece that I had a hard time selecting a gift that would be  beautiful, functional and unique.   I know that my niece will need clothes (as her closest sibling is almost 6 years old), so I was delighted to try out the sets from First Impressions.  About the brand:

First Impressions is a collection of classic clothing for newborns and infants featuring sweet, traditional designs, fine fabrics and time-honored details, with an emphasis on special occasion dressing. The charm and refinement of First Impressions clothing and matching accessories make it a favorite gift choice.  First Impressions collections are available exclusively at over 800 Macy’s stores nationwide and online at macys.com.

The gift set I had the opportunity to sample included an outfit from the Satin Hanger Collection, a five-piece layette set from the Everyday Value Collection and an adorable plush animal.  When I opened the box, my eye immediately went to the outfit in the Satin Hanger Collection (which obviously hangs on a sating hanger, ha!).  It is the most adorable gray dress with embellishments and white cotton capri pants.  The layette set is so incredibly soft and the plush doll finishes off the gift with a cuddly touch!

Combining the outfits and doll will make a cute and memorable baby shower gift!  I can’t wait for this weekend!

Nestle Family Summer Block Party: Day 3

Day 3 already?  The Nestle Family Summer Block Party is half over already!  Have you been entering all the great giveaways on all five blogs?

Obviously, by looking at my blog, you have realized by now that science is a major part of my life.  I love talking at career fairs and sharing the fun of science with those who may eventually venture into the field.  One of the places I love to take my kids for hands-on experiences is the Louisiana Children’s Museum located right here in New Orleans.  Who ever said New Orleans isn’t for kids?!?  With so many hands-off places for little ones in this world, it’s nice to take my girls to a place that is completely kid friendly, fun and educational.

With over 30,000 square feet and more than 100 interactive exhibits, my kids LOVE this place!  The girls love reading section, the supermarket, the pretend restaurant and of course the science exhibits!  This weekend, the Louisiana Children’s Museum is hosting “Fetch! Beach Science” on Saturday, July 17th from 11:00am-3:00pm. From the website:

Dive into the science of the beach.  Do an experiment in the Atrium to find out why you can float better in salt water.  Learn about the spirals of a sea shell and then create your own in Art Trek.  Discover sand writings and make a sand bottle.  Help measure the length of a blue whale in our architecture exhibit.”

Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend!  And it’s even air-conditioned…BONUS! :)

Talk Back to the T.V.! Watch The View with Clay Aiken!

Clay Aiken joined the crew on The View today, filling in while Barbara is finishing up her recovery.  The ladies and Clay launched into Hot Topics (which is definitely my favorite part of the show) and dove into Mad Mel once again.  It seems Mel didn’t get my memo yesterday and is still putting his manic rants out there.  Is there any way the mayor of Hollywood can issue a gag order for Mel so that he just can’t talk anymore at all?  Mr. Mayor, if you are reading this, I beg you.  Please.  I’ll fly out there myself and do it with duct tape, if you wish.  If you haven’t heard Mel putting his whole leg in his mouth, not just his foot, check out RadarOnline.com. The ladies and Clay speculate that Mel may never recover his image after losing it this time.   Whoopi wondered why Oksana went to RadarOnline first rather than go to the police?  So much speculation and tidbits of unconfirmed information.  The only confirmation I can offer is:  Mel’s lost it, y’all. I mean, we all kind of thought he lost it for agreeing to star in Lethal Weapon 4, but this time he’s really lost it.  For reals.

Can we go back and change the name of Mel's blockbuster from Braveheart to Pottymouth?

Next up on Hot Topics was the recent controversy regarding the survey sent out to service men and women regarding openly gay soldiers and how you would feel about it.  The survey was put out by the Pentagon and has offended many.

Hey, only children out there!  Did you know a recent study by Time magazine shows that it’s a myth that only children are more selfish than those individuals with siblings who have to compete for parental attention?  I will say that although some days I would have paid someone to take my two younger brothers, I am glad I was not an only, and I hope and pray my two children feel the same way.  On the same note, a recent New York  Magazine article says that there are many parents out there that claim to love their kids but hate their life.  Ouch. I hope none of the moms I know feel that way, but I will say that we all know parenthood isn’t something to be entered into lightly, or something to do just because you feel like you’re “supposed to.”  Food for thought there, boys and girls!

Rock star Bret Michaels came to visit and discuss his recent health scare after a brain hemorrhage that almost ended his life.  After years of hard living, Bret is now taking precautions to ensure he will live a long time and will have another surgery in January.  Bret talked about the possibility of being the next judge on American Idol to replace Simon.  I would love to see that! Bret also sang a song from his new album Custom Built and sounded every bit as strong as he did back in his glory days.  Need a definition of “glory days?”  See below.

Does this picture make any of you laugh as hard as I do when I see it? Now for you youngsters, back in the day, this was considered HOT. Crikey.

Wrapping up today was adorable Lisa Lillien (aka The Hungry Girl) to show everyone some easy swaps to save calories on pigs in a blanket, hot wings, potstickers, mushroom tartlets, and even some favorite summer drinks that can be found in her new book, Hungry Girl Happy Hour.

Today’s show was a great one!  I always find something interesting to think about on The View.  I have found that the more I watch, the more I get used to the girls fighting for “talk time” over each other during Hot Topics!  It’s just like when my girlfriends and I get together….none of us can get a word in edgewise.  I have sort of felt sorry for the guest co-hosts…..none of them can compete with the chattiness!  If I were co-hosting I’d have to bring a talking stick or something!  Can’t wait to see who’s chatting tomorrow on The View!

Disclosure: As a “View Ambassador,” I was given financial compensation by ABC Daytime to write my opinions of the recent View episodes.  However, all opinions remain 100% my own.

Send a Smile with CardsDirect!

Can you believe that Christmas is only a little over 5 months away?  Each year it seems to sneak up on me and before I know it, the time has come for our annual family photo session (thanks, April!) for our Christmas card.  We generally take our picture in late October and select our card design no later than mid-November which is all closer than I want to think about right now!  Fortunately, I found a great site, Cards Direct, which features a HUGE selection of holiday cards!  About CardsDirect:

cardsdirectCardsDirect is quite simply passionate about greeting cards. In our electronic world where millions of emails, texts, and instant messages are exchanged daily, we know that a traditional hand signed Greeting Card can grab someone’s attention unlike most other forms of communication. Think back to the last time you received an unexpected card from a friend or associate . . . the appreciation you felt that someone put the time and thought into sending you a card. CardsDirect knows that a quality card, professionally printed with your personal message or brand, at the best value, is an effective way to promote yourself or company with others.cardsdirect4

Looking around the site, I instantly fell in love with the unique Christmas card designs.  There is even a whole section dedicated to Professional holiday cards which are perfect for Doctors, Legal Offices and a ton of other professions!  My Mom is a Realtor and this one would be great for her clients (what do you think, Mom?).

cardsdirect5In just a few weeks, my sister in law is expecting a baby girl, so I was checking out the birth announcements and photo cards.  How can you resist the sweet baby faces in these baby announcements?!?  I love the unique designs and the fact that you can order as little as 25 cards (envelopes are included).  And the price is great, too!  Many of the Christmas Photo Cards I have my eye on for this year are available as low as $0.84 a piece.  Not bad at all!

Before the holiday season sneaks up on you, check out CardsDirect for this year’s inspiration!

For today’s Backyard Science Project, it’s time to get messy! Who doesn’t love a good volcano, right? I found a great protocol for a backyard volcano from FamilyEducation.comHere’s how to get started:

materials

Baking pan, Soda bottle (16 or 20 oz.), Moist soil, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 cup vinegar, Red food coloring
and the great outdoors!

Place the baking pan on the grass, and set the soda bottle in the middle of the pan.  Mound and shape the moist soil around the bottle to form a mountain. Bring the soil right up to the top of the bottle’s opening, but don’t get the soil inside the bottle.  Next, pour one tablespoon of baking soda into the bottle.  Color one cup of vinegar with red food coloring and pour the colored vinegar into the bottle. Stand back and watch red foam spray out of the top and down the mountain like lava from a volcano!

Good Earth Dry Dinner Kits: Review and Giveaway

Because our family consists of two full time working parents, we have very little time to prepare healthy, balanced meals when we get home.  It is often tempting to eat out because it is quick and easy (although not healthy or budget-friendly).  My husband and I have really tried very hard lately to plan our week of meals in advance.  If we know what’s for dinner, we don’t waste time deciding and are much less tempted to grab a take-out menu.  Boxed meals are something we tend to grab at the grocery because honestly, they are quick and cheap.  But, more often than not, a boxed meal contains more calories than we should really be consuming at dinner.

Thanks to My Blog Spark, I was able to try a new dry dinner kit from Good Earth, the Mediterranean Chicken with Angel Hair Pasta.  From the press release:

“With appetizing entrées from Good Earth, dining in is sure to become the new dining out. Enjoy cooking a sophisticated, restaurant-quality meal in the comfort of your own home. Each variety includes vibrant and flavorful sauces along with specialty ingredients like sweet basil, white wine and dried tomatoes. Delicious dinners that allow you to keep a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing taste, Good Earth dry dinner kits are perfect for whipping up a no-fail, five-star cuisine in less than 30 minutes.

100% whole grain, no trans fat, no artificial flavors, no artificial preservatives, no MSG – just add meat and, voila! Dinner is served!”

PhotobucketThe dinner kits come in 4 varieties: Mediterranean Chicken with angel hair pasta, Spicy Citrus Glazed Shrimp with angel hair pasta, Herb Crusted Chicken with mushroom risotto and Tuscan Chicken with penne pasta. We prepared the Mediterranean Chicken for my family of four tonight at dinner.  It was very easy to fix (the hardest part was cutting the chicken!) and really was finished in 30 minutes.  The quantity was perfect for my family size and it was delicious!  Even my two year old asked for seconds!  The meal did not taste boxed and I was very happy that we managed to serve a successful hot meal for our family in a short amount of time.

GIVEAWAY

Want to try it, too?  I have one Good Earth prize package including one Good Earth Mediterranean Chicken dry dinner kit, two sets of bamboo flatware, two bamboo dishes, a bamboo utility board and a 100% recyclable grocery tote for one lucky reader!

Talk back to the TV! Watch The View…Barbara is back!

The View was back live today after last week’s vacation and the women were rested and ready to let it rip.  Hot Topics first congratulated Spain for winning their first World Cup.  I am happy for Spain but also happy that I don’t have to listen to the annoying vuvuzela any longer!  The first major Hot Topic discussed was LeBron James’ decision to play for Miami Heat after much speculation that he would stick with Cleveland, where he has been for 7 years.  Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert fired back with a scathing letter detailing his sour grapes.  Whoopi and Elisabeth agreed that the owner needed to relax, as business is business.  Joy speculated that maybe the Cavaliers were sore because of all the fanfare that surrounded LeBron while he made this choice.  After all, ESPN had a one hour “announcement” special for him to be interviewed and end the speculation.  Once he announced it, Cavaliers fans burned his jersey and have turned their backs on LeBron.   Yikes. Of course, most of y’all know Bridgette and I bleed black and gold for our beloved New Orleans Saints, and although business is business, I can imagine some of our crazed fans feeling the same way about my boyfriend Drew Brees if he decided to pull up roots and go play for the enemy Falcons.  I dare not even speak of it.

My boyfriend Drew. Have we mentioned here at The Not So Blog that the WHO DATS were the Superbowl champs? Sorry, getting off track........

Next up: Mel Gibson.  For those not in the know, Mel is embroiled in a heated verbal match with the mother of his 8th child.  Although not confirmed that it’s actually Mel, Oksana Grigorieva  (the mother of the baby) has leaked racial-slur laced phone conversations to the press.  Assuming it is Mel, I will just say this:  Mel, please stop talking.  Just stop.  You’re not studly Mad Max in the Thunderdome anymore.  You’re just coming off like a washed up old man who is slightly deranged.  Just be quiet.  No more bad words, ok?   Thanks! Whoopi claims to know Mel pretty well and insists that she is not happy with what he did, but knows he is not a racist.  I will say Whoopi is a lot more understanding than I would be!  Side note:  I had almost forgotten my beloved Tina Turner was in Mad Max!  Ahhh, the 80′s.  Good times.

Maybe Aunty Entity can explain to Mad Mel why it's not nice to use racial slurs? Just sayin'!

Barbara Walters was able to join in via Skype today to check in with the ladies for the first time since having heart surgery.  Barbara looks great 2 months post-surgery and is fully recovered!  Barbara thanked all the fans for their well wishes during her recovery.   When she described the procedure she had done, I was really in awe that she has made such progress in just two months.  Barbara says that all women need to urge their doctors to give them an EKG to screen for potential heart issues.   Thanks for the heads up Barbara!  I think we can agree that all women need to take control of their health and health care.

Next Hot Topic is Jake and Vienna.  I discussed these two crazies in a previous View post.  Did y’all see the breakup interview on last week’s Bachelor? Have mercy.  Elisabeth, like me, is “addicted” to The Bachelor and all the women agreed this drama was nauseating.  Maybe we can find some remote island for Mel, Jake, and Vienna?  Serenity, NOW!

Angie Harmon stopped in to visit today and talk about her new show Rizzoli and Isles. After a long stint on Law and Order, Angie has switched to TNT for her new show, which is getting great reviews.  Angie is married to adorable NY Giants star Jason Sehorn and they have 3 beautiful girls, all under the age of 6.  Needless to say, Angie stays busy and is planning on pulling up her roots in Los Angeles and heading down South to raise her girls in a more “down home” environment.  Welcome home, Angie!

American Idol winner Lee DeWyze visited The View to talk about his rags-to-riches story of how he went from paint salesman to playing to screaming crowds of on tour.  Lee seems to be getting his footing and is working on his album which is coming out in October.  Lee sang a beautiful rendition of Halleluja -definitely one to find on iTunes.

Clay Aiken is co-hosting Tuesday!  Watch The View with  me!

Nestlé Family Summer Block Party

The Not-So Blog

Each week, all five blogs including 24/7 Moms, Classy Chaos, Cutie Booty Cakes, Momma Findings and myself will be featuring some great summer tips and hosting some incredible Nestle Giveaways (you do NOT want to miss what I have in store for you on Friday!).  Here at Experimental Mommy (aka The Not-So-Blog), I will be writing about fun backyard science projects you can do with your kids this Summer (very appropriate, right!?).  Today’s tip courtesy of the “Science is Fun” website:

While searching the internet for some fun projects, I found a neat way to teach your kids about Carbon Dioxide.  I know, I know, you are thinking, “How can carbon dioxide be fun?”  But what if I told you that carbon dioxide can make raisins dance?!?  Now, we have the kids attention!

materials

A can of colorless soda (e.g., 7-Up or Sprite), a tall, clear glass or plastic cup and several fresh raisins.

Pour the can of soda into the tall glass. Notice the bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. The bubbles are carbon dioxide gas released from the liquid.  Next, drop 6 or 7 raisins into the glass and watch the raisins for a few seconds. Describe what is happening to the raisins. Do they sink or float? Keep watching; what happens in the next several minutes?

Raisins are denser than the liquid in the soda, so initially they sink to the bottom of the glass. The carbonated soft drink releases carbon dioxide bubbles. When these bubbles stick to the rough surface of a raisin, the raisin is lifted because of the increase in buoyancy. When the raisin reaches the surface, the bubbles pop, and the carbon dioxide gas escapes into the air. This causes the raisin to lose buoyancy and sink. This rising and sinking of the raisins continues until most of the carbon dioxide has escaped, and the soda goes flat. Furthermore, with time the raisin gets soggy and becomes too heavy to rise to the surface.

Need a Mealtime Makeover? E-Mealz Review and Coupon Code!

Like most people, I hate doing our yearly taxes, but one of the things I REALLY dread is when we take a long, hard look at exactly where our money goes, and how much of it.  One of the places we seem to always spend a lot is the grocery store.  Although we typically eat out on weekends, I cook every night for the family.   I am always looking for ways to save money at the grocery!  Recently, someone told me about E-Mealz and I was curious to try it out and see if it really worked.  What is E-Mealz?  From the website: “E-Mealz will help you to save time, money and make time for family with delicious weekly dinner menu plans everyone will love!”

emealz-1

How does it work?  For $5 a month (yes, you read that right…a mere $1.25 a week) you can register for one of 26 meal plans, published weekly, that are tailor-made for your family’s needs.  You choose the plan according to where you shop (menus are based on weekly specials and sales a particular store), dietary needs (Low-Carb, Low-Fat, and  Vegetarian are available), and your family’s size (anywhere from 2-6 people).  Registration is fast and easy and within minutes you print your weekly menu (complete with recipes) and grocery list!   If your particular grocery store isn’t on the list, you can even choose the “Any Store” plan that gives you an economical menu no matter where you shop.  The grocery list is incredibly easy to follow as the items are organized.  If you decide to eliminate a meal or two should your family choose to eat out, everything is coded so that you can easily scratch off whatever you don’t need to buy.

This week’s Wal-Mart meal plan total was under $80, which is far less than I usually spend.  I hit the store with my list in hand and was able to easily collect the things I needed.  There were a couple of things my store was out of, so I had to get a different brand, some of which were slightly higher priced, but my grocery total was not much over what E-Mealz anticipated and was still far less than I normally spend on dinner items.

This week’s menu included  Roasted Chicken with Cranberry Feta salad, Salsa Steak over Rice, and my kids’ favorite, Cinnamon Swirl French Toast.  (What is it about having breakfast for dinner that is so good?)  Other menu items were equally delicious and balanced, and I was happy to see we weren’t eating boxed macaroni and cheese in order to spend less at the grocery.   See a sample menu here. Recipes are super easy so you don’t have to be Emeril in order to put something delicious on the table for your family.

I would highly recommend E-Mealz to anyone looking to save time and money.  You can even give E-Mealz as a gift to someone you love.  Check out the FAQ page too so that you can get answers to commonly asked questions.  You can also check out E-Mealz on Facebook and Twitter and see what other money-saving cooks are saying.

COUPON CODE

I will be following E-Mealz for the next month and will post again at the end of the month for a wrap-up.  In the meantime, I am so excited to share that E-Mealz has very generously offered our readers a membership discount.  Any first-time subscribers can earn 10% off your membership by entering the code savemoney when prompted at registration.  E-Mealz also offers a referral incentive if you have friends sign up!  Incredible!  Let me know if you sign up and what you all think!  Thanks, E-Mealz!
