Nestle Family Summer Block Party: Day 3

Day 3 already?  The Nestle Family Summer Block Party is half over already!  Have you been entering all the great giveaways on all five blogs?

Obviously, by looking at my blog, you have realized by now that science is a major part of my life.  I love talking at career fairs and sharing the fun of science with those who may eventually venture into the field.  One of the places I love to take my kids for hands-on experiences is the Louisiana Children’s Museum located right here in New Orleans.  Who ever said New Orleans isn’t for kids?!?  With so many hands-off places for little ones in this world, it’s nice to take my girls to a place that is completely kid friendly, fun and educational.

With over 30,000 square feet and more than 100 interactive exhibits, my kids LOVE this place!  The girls love reading section, the supermarket, the pretend restaurant and of course the science exhibits!  This weekend, the Louisiana Children’s Museum is hosting “Fetch! Beach Science” on Saturday, July 17th from 11:00am-3:00pm. From the website:

Dive into the science of the beach.  Do an experiment in the Atrium to find out why you can float better in salt water.  Learn about the spirals of a sea shell and then create your own in Art Trek.  Discover sand writings and make a sand bottle.  Help measure the length of a blue whale in our architecture exhibit.”

Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend!  And it’s even air-conditioned…BONUS! 🙂

  1. We like to go to the beach on really hot days and cool off in the lake.

    shawn113(at)hotmail(dot)com

  2. We go to to a variety of watering holes. Don’t care which one, river, lake or pool, just needs to cool us down.

  3. I beat the heat in the summer by eating ice cream or gelato! My whole family loves it. Sometimes we even make our own ice cream sandwiches with homemade cookies!

  4. carry a spray bottle of water from thee fridge and take advantage of every opportunity to ‘play in the rain’ 😉

  5. When it is in the 90s, as it is now, we do seek out activities in the air conditioning. It’s just too dangerous out there in those temperatures.

  6. We setup our portable AC in our front room and close all the doors and camp out…we try to get outside before it gets too hot and once it cools down a little bit. Occasionally we break out the sprinkler or the pool, and I always have otter pops!

  12. We enjoy going to the pool. If it’s too hot for that, we crank up the air conditioning at home and pop in a movie to pass the hot afternoon.

  13. Outside we break out the sprinkler and/or kiddie pool and follow that with a popsicle or ice cream cone. Inside we fire up the air-conditioner and watch movies, draw, and play games.

  14. We beat the heat by staying in the pool or the sprinklers! Thanks for the chance!

  18. We don’t do a lot of airconditioned things in the summer, but rather we opt to go our and play in the sprinkler, have watergun fights, or swim in a friend’s pool.

  23. We go hang out at Borders or Books-A-Million and read or we go to the library. We also have an indoor playground at our local mall.

  24. On nice days, we spend time in our pool and sometimes we play with water balloons. If it’s rainy or too hot, we spend time in the a/c indoors, doing crafts, watching movies or playing games.
    Thanks

  25. We go to the public library ~ it’s air conditioned there. Plus we spend our time at the beach too.

  26. Since it is 110 outside right now, it is too hot for outdoor activities. We find indoor fun…even if it is only lunch at a fast food restaurant with an indoor play area.

    Thank you. 🙂

  27. I’ve been enjoying the air conditioning in the house…and at the mall (my daughters love to shop). I think we may head to the beach on Friday. Should be beautiful weather…and there is air conditioning in the car for the ride home. Thanks!

  28. We do visit airconditioned events during the heat of the day. We are fortunate to have the pool and spend a lot of time out there.

  29. Beating the heat is important here, too.
Going to the public library, spraying water hoses, keeping wet wash cloths on foreheads and necks, and cooking most things at night help!

  30. We have a HUGE fan that goes on in the living room all the time. We also see a lot of movies at the dollar movie theater just to get in the air conditioning.

  31. I try to get my walk in early then spend the rest of my time in air conditioned comfort.

  32. The air conditioned library is one of our favorite places to spend a hot afternoon (or a place to stay warm in the winter). Many libraries have summer reading programs with special events. Thanks for the contest.

  33. We are very lucky here in the great NW–not too many days are unbearable. and, it cools off in the evening so we have some relief. If I get too hot, I spritz water on my face or fan my face. of course I drink plenty of water. all of us enjoy water play in the backyard when the weather is nice.

  34. @Lexiquin follows you on Twitter. Because this contest is almost over tonight, I am not tweeting. Sorry for the last-minute entry.

  35. Right now we try to stay indoors because the Houston heat and humidity can be unbearable. We also put a tent over the swing set to help keep it cool.

  36. Personally, I like the heat. However, when it gets really hot, I do tend to find activities inside or centered around water (like going to the beach/pool).

  37. we go to the local library or take turns watching friends kids so they can play together inside in the cool.

  38. We beat the heat by going out early in the morning an then going inside where its cool to play games or crafts an watch TV,Ive noticed they tire very quickly outside

    vlbelk(at)Hotmail.com

  39. We hit the pool/park or river before 10 and after 4. During the middle of the day, we either stay home and play or go to one of the many museums in the area.

  40. I beat the heat by doing my daily walks in the early morning and evening.

  45. We beat the heat in the summer with our blow up pools and the sprinkler. We play water limbo and tag with the hose, too.

  46. When I first moved to the south, I beat the heat my staying in doors in the AC. Now that I have lived here awhile and acclimated, I tend to do activities in the morning or evening while the sun isn’t out in full force.

  47. We beat the heat with lots of trips to the local (free!) park with water activities. The kids love cooling off under all the fountains.

  48. We live in Idaho at 5300 ft so there are only a few days a year that the heat is unbearable. We usually just head to the lake on those days.

  49. I like going to the beach and biking through sprinklers. On an unbearable day though, sitting in front of the vent works

  50. We live in Florida so do a lot of air conditioned activities like play games or do crafts. When we do dare the sun, it’s usually to a water park or pool where we can cool off. ….Tiffypoot@aol.com

  55. To beat the heat , we buy a LOT of Sunsreen and take to the water, community pools, lakes, backyard water slides and sprinklers.

  56. We head over to a local Bounce and Play when we can’t stand the heat and humidity. We also stay home in the AC and do quick jaunts out doors! Thanks

  57. Staying inside and finding places we can go to, like the mall, to have some fun and stay cool.

  58. I hate to say this but we stay inside in the air conditioning during really really hot days!! Going to the movies is a perfect activity!

  59. I beat the heat by staying in air-conditioned spaces – restaurants, movies, home, etc. Thanks for the giveaway!

  60. We buy fans for every room. I so wish I was kidding! We also play outside in the kiddie pool…well the kids do, and I watch. 🙂

  61. We don’t have central air, so it’s tough to beat the heat at home in the Florida summer. We use ceiling fans to circulate the air from our one window unit, and we drink a lot of cold drinks and eat a lot of cool salads.

  62. We beat the heat in summer by spending hot afternoons at the movies when prices are more reasonable.
