Who Dat! Who Drag? In memory of Buddy D…

I am sure you know by now, if you follow my blog, my tweets or my Facebook, that I am a Saints fan!  And have you heard that the Saints are headed to the Superbowl?  WHO DAT, BABY!  Miami is about to see a whole other level of tailgating and partying because Saints fans are loyal, diehard people who have been waiting for this day for 40 years.

Want a little taste of how excited Saints Fans are?  Over 2,000 men ran in the streets of New Orleans today in drag.  Oh yes, prom dresses, wedding dresses, high heels and lip gloss were seen on men who had no business wearing a these items.  While waiting on the neutral ground (aka median) for the parade to pass, my husband and I were joking that we felt bad for tourists who just landed in New Orleans that day.  They were either amused or very frightened.  Either way, I am sure it was an experience they (or we) will never forget.

buddy New Orleanians all know the significance of this parade, but for those of you who are perplexed, let me share some background.  Bernard “Buddy” Diliberto was a local sports commentator for 50 years who could only be described as “colorful.”  When the Saints were down and out, he began the “Aint’s” and Saints fans donned paper bags on their heads during the games in the Superdome.   Buddy D promised the citizens of New Orleans that if the Saints ever made it to the Superbowl, he would dance down Bourbon St. in a dress.  Unfortunately, he passed away in 2005 and never saw the Team make it to the big game.

His successor, Bobby Hebert (former Saints Quarterback) vowed to make good on Buddy D’s promise should the Saints ever make it to the SuperBowl…..and they DID!  Bobby Hebert invited the men of New Orleans to join him, wear their best dress and dance through the streets in honor of Buddy D and the Superbowl Saints!

Of course, we just HAD to go line the streets and be a part of the craziness.  Below are a few photos of the parade……

We had an absolute BLAST cheering on the brave men and rooting for the Saints.  Wonder what Indianapolis did today?

Help your Community with the Pepsi Refresh Program!

Living in a Post Katrina New Orleans has certainly had its challenges.  The City has come such a long way since the Storm hit in 2005, but recovery is a far cry from complete in several areas.  If any good came from Hurricane Katrina, I would have to say that it brought our community together.  Citizens banded together to help their neighborhoods rebuild in ways beyond your imagination, but projects are limited by funding.

Pepsi Refresh Logo Beginning February 1st, individuals, companies and non profits can submit ideas for making a positive impact in their community for a chance to be awarded a grant by the Pepsi Refresh Project.  Up to 1,000 projects will be accepted each month and consumers will vote for the projects they think should be funded.  Up to 32 grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $5,000-$250,000 each month!

Ideas can be submitted in one of six categories such as neighborhoods, health, education and arts.  Any US Citizen 13 years of age and older is eligible to submit an application.  So start brainstorming and submit your ideas today!  Don’t forget to follow Pepsi on Twitter and become a Fan on Facebook to make sure you stay up to date on important updates and announcements!

Good Luck!

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Today, my oldest daughter turns 5 years old!  Where did the time go?  I feel like I will blink and she will be 15.  Sometimes I find myself staring at her and wondering what she will look like at 10, 20, 30, etc.  I wonder what she will be when she grows up (a teacher like her Dad, a science geek like her Mom, or something completely her own).  I wonder if I am doing everything I can to ensure that she will grow strong wings and learn to fly on her own one day.  But in the meantime, I am trying to savor every minute….

Win a King Cake from Sucre New Orleans!

Neutral Ground.  Sidewalk side.  Poboy.  Make do do.  Suck the heads.  King Cake.

If these words are in your vocabulary, then you are probably a native New Orleanian.  I am proud to say that I have lived in the Big Easy for my entire life (35 years and counting) and have been fortunate enough to be surrounded with its rich culture and hospitable people.  New Orleans is in my blood and part of my soul and I have to remind myself that not everyone understands our “ways.”  Through my online life, I have met many new friends and it has been great fun to share my City and traditions with them.  With Mardi Gras approaching, it’s a great time to share another New Orleans tradition with you all…..the King Cake!  A little background:

sucrecake “As part of our Christian faith, the coming of the wise men bearing gifts to the Christ Child is celebrated twelve days after Christmas. We refer to this as the Feast of the Epiphany or Little Christmas on the Twelfth Night. This is a time of celebration, exchanging gifts and feasting. Today, the tradition continues as people all over the world gather for festive Twelfth Night celebrations. A popular custom was and still is the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings called “A King’s Cake.”

Inside every cake is a tiny baby (generally plastic now, but sometimes this baby might be made of porcelain or even gold). The tradition of having King Cake Parties has evolved through time, and the person who receives the slice of cake with the baby is asked to continue the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

Originally, King Cakes were a simple ring of dough with a small amount of decoration. Today’s King Cakes are much more festive. After the rich Danish dough is braided and baked, the “baby” is inserted. The top of the ring or oval cake is then covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold.”

From the time I was little, I can remember eating King Cake just about every Friday during Carnival, so as you can imagine, I have tried many, many King Cakes.  Some are better than others, but recently I was asked to try a sample of the King Cake from Sucre New Orleans.  A little about Sucre:

From breakfast to a midnight snack, Sucré is available to satisfy your sweet tooth. Sucré (French for sugared) is an emporium of “artisan” sweets. Unlike a traditional bakery, Sucré serves plated desserts with custom garnishes in addition to boxed treats.

When the King Cake arrived, it was packaged very well (saran wrapped in a cardboard box) which would make this an excellent cake to ship to family and friends.  My daughter inhaled her dinner in order to get to dessert….she could NOT wait to dive into the new King Cake (girl after my own heart).  When we opened the box……

Photobucket

…..I was speechless.  The King Cake from Sucre was honestly the most BEAUTIFUL King Cake I have ever seen.  I know it sounds cliche, but I am serious!  The whole cake appeared gold in color with sparkling glitter creating the purple, green and gold sections like a traditional cake.  My daughter exclaimed that it looked like a “princess cake!”  It came packaged with three Mardi Gras beads to add to the excitement as well as a little card that described the King Cake as, “a ring of twisted, buttery dough sweetened with cinnamon and sugar and filled with a whipped cream cheese filling.

Following the directions, we heated the cake slightly and served what can only be described as pure heaven on a plate!  Honestly, this King Cake is one of the best I have ever eaten!  The cream cheese filling is very light and just makes the cake more moist then others I have tried.  The sugar is perfect and not overpowering.  And if that doesn’t say enough, I have already ordered another King Cake from Sucre!  Don’t live in New Orleans?  Don’t worry!  They ship nationwide for a flat $9.95 fee!

Sucre also offers a great selection of Valentine’s Day gifts for your loved one!  Check out the “I Love You” gift box!

Is your mouth watering yet?  Can you *almost* taste the King Cake?  Sucre has generously offered to share the spirit of Mardi Gras with one lucky Not-So-Blog reader who will receive their very own King Cake!!

One Tourmaline Cluster Cascade Lariat necklace (17″ in length), and one excited Mama (that’s me!). About Zoe and Sleepy Moon Designs Jewelry:

I like to take that beauty and translate it into something very unique and out there, but still suitable for every day wear. results

I first found Sleepy Moon Design on a great blog, Mom Made That.  The jewelry instantly intrigued me and I knew I wanted to check out this company for myself.  I contacted Zoe, the artist and owner, and asked to review their products.  She graciously allowed me to review the Tourmaline Cluster Cascade Lariat necklace.

The necklace arrived in a nice box adorned with a blue ribbon that would be great for gift giving!  I was immediately in love with the color of the stones in the necklace!  I tend to wear a lot of rose/pink/brown/coral color combinations and this necklace will blend nicely with any of those colors.  The sterling silver chain complimented the stones beautifully as well.  The lariat was made to reach 17″ and hit perfectly on my neck.

I wore the necklace today and got several compliments!  The style of the necklace is perfect to dress up a more casual outfit without looking out of place.  Very versatile!

Dentyne Gum Limited Edition: Giveaway

Hi. My name is Bridgette and I am a gum-aholic.

Seriously.  I love gum.  Like love love LOVE gum.  I think sometime around Graduate school, I started chewing gum as a way to relieve stress and nervous energy and have carried the habit well into my adult life.  I would go through packs of gum like crazy even when I bought the jumbo packs of sticks.

You can imagine my excitement when I first starting seeing the new gum bottles containing 60 pieces of heaven (aka gum)!  So when I was asked to review the new Limited Edition Dentyne bottles featuring artwork by Anthony Yankovic, I was more than thrilled!  From the press release:

dentyne Dentyne® is a must-have socializing essential that allows socially addicted consumers to practice safe breath for the confidence to make a close connection instantly.  Dentyne® premium badge edition bottles, a first in the U.S. gum category, come in twelve bold, badgy, limited edition designs for three flavors—Peppermint, Spearmint and Arctic Chill™.  The bottles, designed by artist Anthony Yankovic, are especially appealing to young adults who love socializing.  Anthony previously produced limited edition designs for trend and badge-driven categories like Apparel, Skateboard and Snowboards.

To me, gum is great in any form…sticks, rolls, pieces….but it is absolutely ingenious to put it in a bottle!  The bottles fit perfectly in my car cup holder, my purse, my desk and my nightstand .  I love the fact that the gum pieces are not wrapped in pieces of paper or foil which usually ended up cluttering up my purse.  The bottle is so easy to maneuver and completely convenient.

The new artwork on the Dentyne bottles by Anthony Yankovic makes gum “hip!”  The designs are eye catching and perfect for social events.

Dentyne wants you to experience the same great flavors in a new great packaging! THREE winners will receive one bottle of ALL THREE flavors and one winner will receive the three bottles PLUS an additional bottle autographed by Anthony Yankovic!

Nowali Moccasins: Review and Giveaway

hypothesis The new Spring style of Nowali Moccasins will help to keep Aubrie’s feet warm and prevent slipping on our cold hardwood floors.

materials

One pair of Nowali Spring Flowers Moccasins in a size 2Y, and a toddler with cold feet who is overly excited about her new “big girl” slippers.  About Nowali, Inc.:

nowali “Nowa Li began producing traditional moccasins in Sweden over 50 years ago. The company is proud of its heritage and continues to produce these high quality moccasins in much the same way today (the stitching is still sewn by hand). A comment we frequently hear is “I remember those from when I was a kid !” Today Nowa Li brand moccasins, socks and tights are worn by kids around the world. We look forward to introducing bright new colors and fun new patterns each season.”

results

I love my home.  After Hurricane Katrina, we replaced the flooring in my den and living area with laminate flooring which we have really enjoyed.  The only problem is that since we live in a raised home, the floors get very cold during the winter and remain chilly in the Spring.  I try my best to make sure my girls wear socks or slippers at all times to keep their feet warm, but my toddler has been quite the challenge.

Photobucket

The problem is that she slips on the floor in socks and easily takes off all the slippers I have previously bought.  Until….enter Nowali!  This moccasin is like a sock and shoe combined in one neat little package.  It was a hit from the start!  Aubrie loved the flower design and immediately wanted to put them on.  They are very well constructed, stay on her feet and provide some traction on our slippery floors.  Aubrie will be 2 years old in March, so I ordered a size 2Y, but I probably should have gone a size or even two smaller.  That being said, even though they are too big, it didn’t seem to bother her in the least and she did not trip.  The good thing is that they will last us at least another year!

hypothesis

Nowali, Inc. has the perfect solution for kids slippers!  Not bulky at all, kids are still able to run and play while keeping the moccasins on their feet.  Nowali has four new patterns to welcome Spring!  Most moccasins range from $24.95-$28.95 and come in sizes as low as 6 months.  You can also find some adorable baby socks for infants!  And right now, Nowali is offering FREE SHIPPING on orders over $50!

Does your child need a comfortable way to keep their feet warm?  Nowali has generously offered one lucky Not-So-Blog reader one pair of moccasins from their Spring collection.
