hypothesisThe Leapfrog Tag Reader will be a great way for my preschooler to gain confidence with her pre-reading skills and to teach reading comprehension while having fun!

materials One Leapfrog Tag Reader, The Cat in the Hat book, Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell book and one eager reader (age 4).  About Leapfrog Tag Reader:

tagreaderlogoEasy to use, amazingly responsive and small enough for a child to take anywhere, the Tag reader takes just one touch to make words talk and pictures sing. A small, sophisticated infrared camera at the tip of the reader “reads” letters, words and symbols printed on the special dot-patterned pages of books in the Tag reader collection. Designed for children four to eight, the Tag Reading System works with a diverse library featuring classics Olivia and Green Eggs and Ham as well as activity storybooks with popular characters SpongeBob SquarePants, Disney Princesses and Diego. Kids can continue to use the Tag system as their knowledge grows, choosing to hear an entire story read aloud, hear it read line-by-line or hear individual words. Using The PC- and Mac-compatible LeapFrog® Connect Application designed for the Tag system, parents can download each book’s audio, then drag and drop content onto the reader—just like managing digital camera or MP3 fi les. And best of all, as with most LeapFrog products, parents can see the skills their children are practicing with the Tag system, by logging on to the LeapFrog Learning Path, a free online resource that gives them personalized insights into what their child is learning while playing with their LeapFrog toys, from infant learning toys to grade-school gaming platforms.”

results My 4 year old has always had a love for books.  We make it a priority to read to her each and every night, but now that she has started Preschool she is wanting a little more independence.  She has learned all of her letters and letter sounds and has become quite good at sounding out words.  It won’t be long before she is a full blown reader!  When I saw the Tag Reader system, I knew this would be a great way for Lily to gain confidence as a pre-reader, work on her skills, and gain some independence.

I will admit that I was a little worried that the Tag Reader would do all of the work for Lily and she would become less apt to sound out the words on her own.  But, I was pleasantly surprised.  Lily always attempts to read the words first and then uses the Tag to help her with the words she is unsure of.  I also LOVE the games that are included with each book.  The Tag asks the reader questions about the story which really develops reading comprehension.  I was totally impressed with how well Lily did with these games!

Another great feature is that headphones can be used with the Tag Reader enabling Lily to play with her books in the car or restaurants.  My husband, being a teacher, loved the fact that we can plug the Tag Reader into our computer and monitor Lily’s progress.  This allows us to know what she is struggling with and things would should focus on in future reading sessions.

summary Overall, both Lily and I absolutely love the Leapfrog Tag Reader.  She has played with it on many occasions and has enjoyed showing her grandparents how well she can read.  Leapfrog offers 25 book titles so you are sure to find a topic or character that interests your little reader.  The Tag Reader can hold up to 10 stories at a time, so there is always ample material for your child.  The system, which includes the Reader and The Cat in the hat retails for $49.99.  This would make an excellent gift for the holidays!
