Mardi Gras Mambo Day 1: King Cake! CONTEST CLOSED

After Christmas is over and all of the presents and decorations are put away, the date I look forward to the most is January 6th, the Epiphany (or King’s Day). This day is the official start of the Carnival Season and every New Orleanian knows what that means…….

It’s King Cake Time!!!!

So, it is only fitting that we start our “Mardi Gras Mambo” giveaway series with a King Cake Package from Randazzo’s Camellia City Bakery!

Renee from What Mommies Need and I just love the sweet smell of King Cake! We knew that we must share this totally yummy tradition (and calories!) with our readers.

King’s Day is celebrated as the date the gift-bearing Magi visited the baby Jesus. The King Cake is baked in honor of the three kings and the baby (plastic, porcelain or gold) placed inside the cake symbolizes the baby Jesus. Originally, these oval cakes were a simple ring of dough with a small amount of decoration. Today’s King Cakes are much more festive! After the rich Danish dough is braided and baked, the “baby” is inserted. The top of the ring or oval cake is then covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, green and gold.
In New Orleans, King Cake parties are held throughout the Carnival Season. The person who receives the slice of cake with the baby is asked to continue the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

The nice folks over at Randazzo’s Camellia City Bakery have graciously offered one lucky reader
a medium traditional king cake package (including baby) baked to perfection!

This package includes a unique Randazzo’s Mardi Gras theme bag, stuffed with beads, doubloons, the history of Mardi Gras and the king cake, a 2009 commemorative 11x 16 color poster, and a beautiful feather mask.

Randazzo’s Camellia City Bakery continues a long family tradition of handmade and braided king cakes and say with heartfelt sincerity that everything at Randazzo’s is “made with love from beginning to end.”

Randazzo’s was even featured on the Food Network’s popular program Unwrapped!

Think Thin Thursdays

It’s Thursday! Are you Thinking Thin?

Let me just get this out of the way: My lack of motivation has continued. I am not even willing to step on the scale this week because honestly, I don’t think it’s good for me today. If it’s gone up, I may just give up and that is not what I want to do. So, please forgive me, but I am skipping the weigh in this week.

I hope you guys have some motivating stories for me this week! Tell me how great you have done and why I should get out of my funk and get with the program! Don’t forget to blog about your success (or obstacles) and include your goals for the upcoming week. If you met your goal for THIS week, please sign the Shrinky Linky so we can all give you a virtual “pat on the back!”

Because Valentine’s Day is coming up, I know it will be hard not to over-indulge on the sweets. My friend, April over at Just Typical Life shared these links with me today and I thought they both looked like fabulous ideas for Valentine’s desserts!

The first link comes from Hungry Girl who has a great way to make a low calorie Chocolate Lava Cake!

And if you aren’t in the mood for baking, try these (almost ready to eat) Betty Crocker Warm Delight Minis. They are only 150 calories!

Your task for this week:
Share your favorite low calorie dessert! What should I be looking for at the grocery store?

My favorite are the Skinny Cow ice cream cones! The little morsel of chocolate at the bottom is worth the wait!

Good Luck this week, ladies! I promise to get back on the bandwagon!

What is WITH the McDonald’s Logo?!?

Why is it that BOTH of my children have odd reactions to the McDonald’s logo? Are the Golden Arches really THAT disturbing?
I once wrote a post about the Golden Arches being the universal symbol for “I have to potty.” Every time Lily sees the logo, she MUST stop and potty. It’s like she is writing a book about the best McDonald’s bathrooms!

Every Tuesday is McDonald’s night in my house. Lily has dance class and on the way home, we always stop to order a Happy Meal for dinner. The MINUTE we pull into the drive-thru, Aubrie sees the McDonald’s sign and starts to cry. It’s getting old. Even Lily is tired of hearing Aubrie scream for 10 minutes straight as we wait in line (it’s never fast).

Tonight, as Aubrie was performing her regular banshee yell in line, Lily tried lying to her little sister by telling her that we were actually at Burger King. LOL! It didn’t work. Aubrie’s too smart for that!

Review: Spring Los Angeles

I am a Mom of 2 that works full time outside the home as a Lab Technician. I’ll admit, I eat out for lunch more than I should. But, it’s so easy to give in to the awesome food (hey, I live in New Orleans) around my office when I see my pitiful looking sandwhich in a boring, ugly brown bag. Can you relate?

springlogo

Then, you have GOT to check out the lunch bags at Spring Los Angeles. This company offers you an alternative to the boring brown bag with bold colors and modern designs. The totes come in 5 fun designs and 2 sizes (medium and large).

springgroup

These totes are not only cute, they are fully insulated, too! Here’s some of the technical stuff from the website:

The secret to out superior temperature retention is a multi-layer insulation consisting of a thick, polyethylene foam layered between an outer fabric layer, a water-proof and leak-resistant lining, and a material backing. Together, these four layers create a maximum insulation to keep hot items hot and cold items cool.

Spring Los Angeles was nice enough to send me a Large Berry Bliss tote to review! My first impression was that it was super cute! It definitely looks more like a purse than a cooler. This would be perfect to sneak drinks into a theater because no one would suspect it’s actual purpose (I didn’t say that…ssshhhh)!

I love the size of the Large tote. It’s not too big to be bulky when carrying it, but the tote easily fit a water bottle standing up and a full size frozen entree with PLENTY of room to spare. I also love all of the organizational pockets and compartments (yes, these things rock my socks! LOL!). And did you know that the exterior is made of recycled canvas?!?

046

I would highly recommend Spring Los Angeles for stylish, affordable and functional lunch totes that are not only great for work, but for picnics and trips to the beach, too!
