ZarBee’s Cough Syrup: Review and Giveaway CONTEST CLOSED

Nothing is worse than the feeling of helplessness when you hear your little one cough through the night. With the FDA banning most cold and cough medicines for children, parents have few alternatives. After a literature review, the creators of ZarBee’s found that most of the clinical trials show that cough medicines are no more effective than using nothing at all. However, they did find that in children ages 2-18 with upper respiratory infections, that buckwheat honey was more effective than dextromethorphan (also called DM and commonly found in Robitussin, Dimetapp, Delsym, etc.) in reducing nighttime coughs, child sleep, and parent sleep.

Using special blends of dark honey, vitamins, and all other natural ingredients, ZarBee’s created an incredibly effective cough syrup that is safe enough to be used in children all the way down to 12 months of age. Time and time again, it has proven to be effective in reducing coughs and sore throats due to throat irritation.Zarbee’s sent me two bottles of cough syrup to try out: the cherry flavor and the lemon flavor. The bottles arrived just in time (how did they know I had a scratchy throat?)! I tried both flavors over the course of two days and I can honestly say that my throat is not as irritated and I was able to finally get some rest. I definitely like the cherry flavor better, but depsite the fact that I am not too big on lemon flavoring, the lemon syrup was not all that bad!

I wanted to check with my Pediatrician before giving this product to Lily if she ever needs it. So, I sent her the website for ZarBee’s and this is what she had to say:

The first thing to notice is that it’s only recommended for 12 months and up. It is not safe to give honey to children under 12 months (their immune systems cannot handle possible contamination with botulism)! That being said, this is a possible alternative to regular cough syrups. Studies have shown honey to be effective for cough, not necessarily better, but effective. I should clear up that drug labeling on cough/cold meds have changed to “do not give under 4 years old” (and sometimes under 6) due to parents overdosing and accidental ingestions. The medications themselves can be safe and effective when used properly. So always ask your pediatrician for the proper dosage when not on the label, and always keep medicines out of your child’s reach. A cool mist humidifier is still best for little ones under 12 months (still helpful for the older ones too). ZarBee’s is a reasonable alternative, and i’m sure it tastes better, too!”

You can purchase Zarbee’s online for $9.99 and it should be available in major retailers soon!

Enter the code NotSoBlog at checkout and receive $2.00 off EVERY bottle. They are also offering free shipping as well!

Want to try it out for yourself? ZarBee’s has offered THREE lucky readers two bottles each (one of each flavor)!

Tooth Tunes: Review and Giveaway CONTEST CLOSED

Is getting your child to brush their teeth an ongoing struggle in your family? Win the battle easily with Tooth Tunes!

Specially designed for little hands and mouths, the Toothtunes Junior toothbrush is perfectly sized for young children with their first teeth. Each Toothtunes Junior toothbrush is uniquely edited with one minute of preschool-friendly music and encouraging phrases to motivate and congratulate little ones while they brush. Children will hear one motivational phrase as they begin to brush their teeth, another phrase in the middle of the cycle to encourage them to keep going, and one phrase at the end to reward them for brushing. This talk-to-me technology is combined with Toothtunes proprietary technology which transmits sound and music vibrations from the bristles, through the teeth, to the inner ear so kids hear the music and phrases in their head.

The Toothtunes Junior assortment includes: exclusive songs such as ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It Brush Your Teeth;” popular Walt Disney songs including “Bear Necessities,” from The Jungle Book and “Hakuna Matata,” and “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” from The Lion King; theme music from the popular Transformers and My Little Pony brands.

Lily was so excited to try out the Toothtunes Junior (for ages 3 to 6)! She was given the “Bear Necessities” toothbrush and she LOVED it! She could not wait to brush her teeth and her face was just priceless when the music started. The toothbrush gave her encouraging words during the one minute brush time and let her know when it was time to stop. How funny to see your child dance around the bathroom while they brush! I definitely want to protect this smile!

I would definitely recommend this product, and at only $9.99, you can’t go wrong!

Want to try it out for yourself? Tooth Tunes has generously offered TWO readers a “Bear Necessities” toothbrush!

Princess Bride Game: Review

Now that Lily is just about to turn 4, she has become quite computer savvy! I am very impressed with how well she does moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard (I think she is very proud of herself because she wants to do “her work” on the computer all day long….maybe SHE should have a blog….hhhmmmm…..).

I knew Lily would be more than excited to help me review the new PC game (rated E for Everyone), the Princess Bride Game. This game was rated one of Parenting Magazine’s Top 8 PC Games for your Kids!
From the magazine:
The entire family can once again experience the magic of the classic fantasy film through this officially licensed PC game tie-in. The Princess Bride Game features varied scenarios that require gamers to help Princess Buttercup and Westley manage life on the farm, concoct miracle remedies, and vanquish the evil prince in order to live happily ever. The game features voices from the film’s original cast members.

Lily got a big kick out of the animation before each game. She really enjoyed playing the “As you Wish” game where she got to water a garden and bring carrots to Princess Buttercup! A few of the games were over her head (such as the Battle of Wits section which hosts a series of trivia questions), but Lily enjoyed watching as I played that round.

All in all, I thought it was a fun game and we will be playing it together again soon! You can purchase the game at Amazon.com or Best Buy!

Aloha Friday!

Welcome to Aloha Friday’s! All you have to do is post an answer to my question. If you would like to join in the fun, post your own question on your blog (nothing requiring a lengthy answer) and sign the Mr. Linky at An Island Life!

This week’s question:

If your blog could have a mascot, what would it be?

I think I am going with either The Hurricanes or The Termites (both for obvious reasons).

Think Thin Thursdays

Welcome back to Think Thin Thursday! How was your week?

Let’s get right to business. First, my weigh in…….drumroll, please……………..

Ok, so I only lost 0.2 lbs this week. But, it is nice to be out of the 120′s. To be completely honest, I sort of had a love affair with salt this week, so I am really not shocked that I didn’t lose more.

My goal for the upcoming week is to lose one pound and to keep chugging the water.

Enough about me, tell me your successes and hurdles! Did you achieve your goal this week? Make sure you sign the Shrinky Linky below if you did (no later than 11:59PM on Saturday, January 17th)! To reward your hard work this week, I have got a special “treat” for one lucky achiever! One person will be picked at random from the Shrinky Linky to win 8 boxes of Little Debbie 100 calorie snacks reviewed in this post!

This week: Don’t forget to put this Think Thin Thursday button on your sidebar and blog about your goal for this week. Also, try to visit the blogs of the participants and show some support!

The task of the week: Include in your Think Thin Thursday post one website or blog that helps you on your weight loss journey (through either tips, recipes, inspiration, support, etc.)

The website that I really love is 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet. This site features tips, recipes, tools and calculators, and a great forum which includes topics on all sorts of programs such as Weight Watchers or South Beach.

Keep up the good work, y’all! Looking forward to reading about your progress! See you next Thursday!

Little Debbie Snack-Off! Review and Giveaway CONTEST CLOSED

Those of you that follow my blog probably know that I started a Meme called “Think Thin Thursdays” in order to keep myself accountable during my weight loss journey (I’ve lost 6.2 pounds so far!). My main problem is that I am a snacker. I like to have a snack after lunch and another before bed. This has proven to be one of my major hurdles!
So, when I was contacted by Little Debbie to set up a review of their new 100 calorie snacks, I was all ears! After the New Year, a HUGE box showed up on my front porch filled with wonderful, yummy treats…..8 whole boxes to be exact! I was ready to dive right in and start trying all the new varieties, but I thought…..wait, that would be 800 calories of snacks! Kind of counterproductive, don’t you think?

So, I forced, I mean asked my friends, family and coworkers to help me out with the first ever
Little Debbie Snack-Off!!

Here’s how it works: Each person received two Little Debbie 100 calorie snacks at random. Both treats were sniffed, tasted, and even in some cases licked (I have weird friends, what can I say) and a winner was chosen. Snacks were eliminated until we had an Ultimate Snack Winner!

Friend #1:
Chocolate Nutty Bar: “A nutty, crunchy, satisfying treat. The peanut butter was melt in your mouth soft, not dry like some snacks. Nice combination of sweet and salty. I would buy this snack.”

Triple Fudge Brownies: “Great chocolate flavor. Dense and chewy, but somewhat dry. Single serving is small.”

WINNER: Chocolate Nutty Bar

Friend #2:
Snow Puffs: “Filling. Medley of marshmallow, chocolate and coconut. Tastes like a brownie on the bottom. I would buy this snack.”

Yellow Cake: “Really sweet and cakey. Moist. Icing really tastes like buttercream. Do they sell 100 calories packs of just the icing? I would buy this snack.”

WINNER: Snow Puff

Friend #3:
Chocolate cake: “My first thought when I saw the snack was that it was small, but once I tasted it all my worries were put aside. The cake is dense and moist, definitely gives your mouth the impression that it’s bigger than it appears. I’m a sucker for frosting and this cake satisfied my snacking urge!”

Marshmallow Treats: “I’m not a big lover of store bought marshmallow snacks, but this one was a nice surprise! The size is large enough that it’s satisfying and has a wonderful buttery taste. This snack is probably the most similar to homemade that I have found.”

WINNER: Chocolate cake

Friend #4:
Nutty Bar PB Stix: “At first, I didn’t like how small the snack appeared. But, after finishing the snack, I was surprisingly satisfied. I like that the wafers are made with whole wheat. Great taste!”

Gingerbread cookies: “I really like these! Soft baked, sweet and spicy! Perfect with hot chocolate!”

WINNER: Gingerbread Cookies

After round two, only two snacks remained:

The Chocolate Cake vs. The Gingerbread Cookie

I decided to let my toughest critic choose the Ultimate Snack winner. To see first hand which one she liked the best, check out this video:

Chocolate Cake is the winner!! Run out and try these today!

Are you drooling yet? Want to try them for yourself? Little Debbie had generously offered me TWO sample boxes (including ALL EIGHT boxes of 100 calorie snacks reviewed above!)

How to enter:
1. Visit Little Debbie and tell me which variety of 100 calories snacks you are most excited to sink your teeth into!
